Europe after a knee replacement?
Hello everyone. I have been reading this forum for several years now but hadn't actually joined until today because I have a question that I need some information on. We have been to Europe a few times and realize the amount of walking, the stairs and cobble stones, etc. Mr. Travelplanner is having a knee replacement soon and we were wondering what other people's experiences have been after this type of surgery. How soon after surgery did you do your next trip to Europe? What were the limitations if any and any advice?

I believe your doctor could best tell you, and maybe not until after the operation for the extent of it all. I have been pretty amazed at my sister's recovery period from hers (not for travel), but it did give me hope for when I finally carve out the time.

The most important thing for the recovery period is PHYSICAL THERAPY.
Baring any complications, travel will be possible easily about six weeks after surgery because you should really continue with the exercises even after that to give your knee complete recovery.
Good luck.

This will vary tremendously for a whole host of reasons,''His MD will have a better idea - but until after the surgery and he begins recovery and PT it's really hard to say.
A guy I worked with had fairly straightforward surgery but did his PT only rarely - and 6 months later still had trouble walking more than a couple of blocks.

I had two TOTAL knee replacements in March 2012. I went after my surgery to a physical therapy nursing facility for 3 weeks and was doing therapy at least 4-5 hours a day while there. I met my daughter in Rome the second week of June last year for a week's vacation and walked all over the place without a cane or walker.
I now wear compression hose for all my long flights but the whole experience has changed my life for the better so I now can enjoy my travels like I used to. Good luck-as others said it is the physical therapy and mindset that will help for a speedy recovery.
