Personal accident insurance when renting a car in Ireland

I will be renting a car from Dan Dooley. Personal accident insurance is an option they offer, at a cost of $105. What does this cover and do you recommend getting this insurance? Thanks for your help with this.

When I checked out Dan Dooley a few months ago, there didn't seem to be much choice.

Check your credit card online. I'm using an Amex card, and it covers everything related to auto rentals.

Oddly enough, it turned out that Hertz was my cheapest choice, so I've gone with them.

Just remember that if you rent in Ireland, the drop off fee is significant if you drop it off in Northern Ireland.

Ireland, with its narrow roads, is tough to drive in and I'd be sure to have collision insurance. We had an accident that was covered by the credit card company. I'm not sure they still cover in Ireland, so be sure to check with them. It was very difficult to settle the insurance claim once we got back to the US. Since we rented thru Auto europe, I ended up contacting them for help and they took care of it.

I am not sure how may different AMEX insurances are there. I have their "Premium Car Rental Protection" Underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company. On first page of the Description of Coverage, in paragraph 2, it states "Coverage is worldwide except for vehicles rented in Australia,IRELAND, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand."

Rastaguytoday: Amex does NOT cover Ireland. Neither their Standard coverage NOR their 'Super'. Certain US-issued World Master Cards, Canadian-issued Visa cards and Diner's Club are the only ones that DO. If you try to Waive the Insurances at pick up using AMEX, Hertz will require you to buy the CDW. and PUSH the 'Excess' (Super-CDW)-- by placing a LARGE (1000-3000 EURO 'Hold' and emphasizing that YOU are responsible for ALL damages, up to the Limit of the 'Excess'. Buying BOTH will effectively TREBLE your Car Hire cost.
I URGE you to Double-Check.

OP: Personal Accident Insurance is Medical coverage for the Driver and Occupants, in the event of an accident. It has pretty LOW limits on coverage. If you have NO Medical Insurance (Personal or Travel -- and Medicare does NOT cover when Out of Country), then it MIGHT be worth considering.
If your Personal Insurance covers you, or you have already purchased Trip Insurance that does, then it is probably superfluous ...

You might want to go over to the Ireland forum on Trip Advisor and read the multitude of threads on CDW and Super CDW. There's a lot of good information out there which may help.

Personally, I have rented twice from Hertz using my World Mastercard to cover the CDW. I assumed some risk and did not purchases Super CDW.

Itallian_Chauffer - I went to the touted Fodor travel insurance form to apply for the $24.95 travel insurance good for a year.

They told me that I was already covered by my Amex Card from Citibank.

So, I went to the citicards website and got this information

"Worldwide Auto Rental Insurance Coverage

As an eligible Insured* you are automatically eligible to receive reimbursement for amounts paid for repair of Damage or Loss** to a Rented Automobile***, and for which the Insured is
responsible, when the loss occurs Worldwide. This coverage applies provided the entire rental fee has been charged or debited to your covered Account; and, provided you have rejected, at the time of rental, any waiver of liability for Damage or Loss available from the rental company.

Eligibility:
This Damage or Loss reimbursement is provided to you, as an Insured, automatically when the entire cost of the motor vehicle rental is charged or debited to your covered Account. It is not
necessary for you to notify the Insurance Company or Plan Administrator at the time the rental fee is charged or debited to your covered Account.

The Cost:
This coverage is provided at no additional cost to eligible Insureds under the master policy
issued to Citigroup Inc., by Federal Insurance Company (the Company).
Amount of Insurance:
The Company’s liability will be for a maximum reimbursement of $50,000. From the amount
***Insured means Cardmembers of the Policyholder. Cardmember means any authorized primary or additional card
user who has been issued a card by the Policyholder.
***Damage or Loss means direct and accidental Loss to a Rented Automobile.
***Rented Automobile means a four-wheeled private passenger type motor vehicle or a mini-van manufactured
and designed to transport a maximum of seven passengers and used exclusively to carry passengers. A Rented Automobile
must be designed for travel on public roads and rented from a licensed rental company. Off-road, antique or limited edition vehicles are excluded, as are trucks, recreational vehicles, campers, pick-up trucks and mini-buses of reimbursement due the Insured, the amount of any valid and collectible insurance will
be deducted. In no event will the Company be liable beyond the amounts actually paid by
the Insured."

Sounds to me like I'm insured.

This card also covers me on trip cancellation, lost luggage reimbursement and Travel and Emergency Assistance.

I think it depends on the exact card you have, I'd check the actual terms they mail to you when you got your card, just to be sure. Sometimes they don't list all the terms on the website. But you could be right, I think I've heard some Citibank Amex cards do allow Ireland.

Rastaguytoday:

I don't see HOW ...
Here's info FROM AMEX about Standard AND Premium Coverage. They seem pretty clear on the 'Ireland NOT Covered' issue. Third link is from USA Today. I don't care what Fodors, or CITI say -- What MATTERS is what AMEX and Hertz have to say -- as THAT determines IF you ARE covered and IF your coverage is ACCEPTIBLE by Hertz IN Ireland.
I would LOVE to be wrong, but in THIS instance, I seriously doubt that I am.

Itallian_Chauffer - two things, it also depends on the level of the "premium" Amex Card you have.

Second, the insurance that you listed was the insurance I tried to apply for. They told me to go to my Citicard Amex site as the Amex card covered everything world wide.

I do miss my Diner's Club, when it still was a Diner's Club card.

They always had primary insurance, regardless of where I rented an auto.

Rastaguytoday: I well and truly HOPE that you have been correctly informed, relative to your AMEX coverage. If so, I would be VERY interested in upgrading, myself, as my low-level AMEX card generally provides better perks and service than my World MasterCard.
I've been renting cars in Ireland since 1999 and am coming up on my 18th or 19 rental. In all that time, I've only NOT waived the insurance ONCE -- a 'Package' Deal that voided the Credit Card Terms, since the rental was divided out over four persons. I've always used a MasterCard -- first a 'Gold', in '99, a 'Platinum', from then on out, until about 2005, when coverage was dropped on any card 'below' "WORLD" status ...
Remember, though -- even IF AMEX grants coverage, the OTHER critical part of the equation is IF Hertz will AGREE to accept the AMEX insurance waiver. In Ireland, that is NOT an automatic GIVEN ... NO Car Hire Company there is REQUIRED to accept ANY Credit Card Insurance -- It is ALWAYS at THEIR discretion.
Don't take MY word for it -- one way or the other -- but, I STRONGLY urge you to verify with BOTH AMEX AND Hertz -- just to make SURE that there are NO 'surprises' at pick-up.
And, PLEASE, Let us ALL know if it all works out, as you expected.

From the Hertz website:

"If you decide not to purchase CDW, you may be required to provide a security deposit in the amount of EUR 5,000.00 at the start of the rental using your credit card. This does not apply to contract rates and/or Hertz #1 Gold customers. If this amount is not available on your credit card, you will have to purchase Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), or you may be refused a vehicle.

If you have purchased CDW or it is included in your rate you may be required to leave a security deposit to cover the Damage Excess for the specific car group, fuel and any additional rental costs. This is a pre-authorisation only and not a charge to your credit card. There must however be sufficient funds to cover the authorised amounts.

If you book a rate that excludes our insurance and do not take the insurance products available at time of rental we will require a copy of your insurance policy and/or documentation from your credit card company stating clearly that coverage is provided in Ireland. A €30 non-refundable administration fee is applicable for verification of coverage at the counter and subsequent processing.

We strongly recommend that you fully understand the terms and conditions of any cover provided by your credit card company including your personal liability level and any impact on your private insurance before you decline any of our optional services."

There speaks an Insurance salesman... dig up an old post and not read anything which has been said before..

Besides any of the above if your Travel Insurance is worth the paper it's printed on then that should cover you for Personal accidents.
