Need help w/last minute change in plans--Chamonix or Zermatt June 13th
We planned to go on june 13th to hike in sils-maria--outside st. moritz, but it is snowing there this week and we are afraid that it will be too cold for hiking. It seems to be raining or snowing late this year.
we are thinking of switching destinations to either zermatt or chamonix. we are looking for moderate hikes with beautiful meadow/forest scenary. we loved wengen and murren.
we have never been to chamonix. How does it compare to zermatt or murren? do you recommend it?
After our hiking stay, we need to pick up our plane in zurich. we are open to other ideas.
any recommendations?

I am wondering what makes you think the weather/trail conditions are better in Zermatt or Chamonix. It's still a long time in terms of weather changes until June 13th ... I am pretty sure hiking in Sils Maria is perfect in mid June.
Btw, did you have a look at the webcams in Sils? No snow in the valley (and not in the Fex Valley either, I think.)

I agree with Ingo, as usual! Zermatt is also at a high altitude, and if there is cold/snow in the Alps, you can bet it will blanket Zermatt.
Sorry, never been to Chamonix.
If you want moderate hikes with rolling meadows, I suggest the area around Gstaad/Rougemont/Gruyeres. These are at a lower altitude and stay warmer longer, and there are many walks in the valleys and in the lower mountains. This is also great cycling territory.

it looked as thou zermatt had warmer weather now so we thought we wld have better luck there.
and we wld not have to deal w/driving in the rain!.
but, it sounds as thought you think the weather is the same in both locations.
we had not thought of gruyere. we will check the weather there and the scenary.
any ideas you ahve we wld love to hear.

I, too, would recommend Chateau d'oex for various levels of hiking. The scenery is wonderful. We liked the town and rented a great condo at La Soldanelle which also has fabulous views from all apartments. It also has an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna--great for relaxing in the evenings. We paid a little over $100 for it last September. Many of the condos are rented out by the individual owners. And, no, I am not connected to it in any way--just really enjoyed it! You will find lots of info on it on Google. Enjoy, wherever you decide to go!

We've been checking the mountain forecasts to see when I can take Mom to Gornergrat. This week, except for Monday, the high isn't expected to break freezing. Snow is forecast Tuesday through Friday. Gstaad has a snow and snow/rain mix in its forecast for the week. Even here in low-lying Basel, the high temps are supposed to be only in the low double digits (Celsius of course) at the end of the week.
The warm, sunny weather better come soon! A co-worker who lives just over the border in Alsace keeps bees and says it has been too cold and wet for bees to pollinate the cherry blossoms (the ones that weren't blown off in the rain) -- this year's crop will be small, expensive, and not very sweet.
Swiss cows are giving less milk because they don't like the taste of the grass that came with this chilly, soggy spring.
