Agree with the above. The fins you eat are mostly likely to come from a shark that was solely caught just for its fins, the rest of the body generally gets discarded

The above - sorry about the link are hotels that no longer offer sharks fin on the menu.......whether you try to order it or not.
The increasing amount of tourists from China and other east Asian countries has increased the demand for this dish exponentially, so using hotels that refuse to sell it can only serve to increase awareness of the problem....and hopefully it might rub off on a few more hotels in the region.

Not a good list IMO! THe Four Seasons hotels in Thailand does not offer shark fins and yet it's not on the list. At the same a few of the mentioned hotels in Bangkok does have shark fins, albeit in very small quantities, usually as "garnish" with their other dishes.

Also, upon a second look, there are a lot of other hotels in Thailand that does not serve shark fins that are not mentioned in the list. These hotels does not offer shark fins because of the simple fact that they don't have a Chinese restaurant.

I think it it safe to assume that most hotels without a chinese restaurant do not serve shark's fin...4 seasons don't have one.

Neither does the Anantara Golden Triangle, Anantara Koh Samui, Hotel de la Paix etc and yet they are on the list. Yet hotel chains such as the Four Seasons who have issued a corporate mandate of not serving shark fins have been omitted from the list. Highly unfair to hotels who have made statement of supporting a ban on finning and yet their names are not mentioned.

As I've said a poorly made list!

the list is published by "fin free Thailand' the purpose is to encourage people to support businesses that "making the healthy and sustainable choice to completely ban shark fin".
*Fin Free and the Blue List is not a certification program. The Blue List recognizes meaningful business commitments to shark conservation and public health. Compliance checks are conducted. "

Although the list is not that long at present I'm sure the organisation would be pleased to hear from further businesses who wish to add their name to the list.

It's good to receive feedback on the Blue List.

There will be a significant update and upgrade of the list next month, as there have been a flood of Fin Free business pledges since it was first launched, including from all Four Seasons properties. Our campaign is volunteer driven, so please bear with us as we work to develop an improved list.

As khunwilko notes, the list aims to acknowledge healthy and sustainable policy with regard to sharks. Whether or not a hotel has a Chinese restaurant is not a criteria considered by this list. The simple criteria is an implemented 100% ban on serving shark fin, backed by signed pledge. Even if a hotel never served shark fin before, their pledge can act as an encouragement to others.

This 100% ban criteria is important because some hotels we've been in discussion with have taken the positive step of removing shark fin from their menus and promotions, but may still serve hundreds of bowls at request for weddings and VIP banquets. These hotels do not qualify for the Blue List. As you can appreciate, complete bans are urgently needed to significantly reduce demand for shark fin.

PLEASE let us know via the website if you document shark fin being served at any listed establishment, we will investigate any evidence-based report. If a business is found to be in breech of its pledge and is not prepared to take immediate corrective action, it will be removed from the Blue List.
