Croatia Question: Korcula or Lastovo?
Thanks in advance for your advice! We are a group of 7, three generations of a family ranging in age from 75 to 4, who will be spending 2.5 weeks in Slovenia and Croatia late July and early August. We have a 3 night stretch which we will either spend on Korcula or Lastovo and I am looking for feedback on how these islands compare. Specific questions:
1. We know August is high season, but which of these islands will be more crowded? Any chance of some peace on either one?
2. We do not need sandy beaches but would like a good place to swim that is safe for children. Which island is better for that?
3. We will then be going on to Dubrovnik. While we see the catamaran is an option from either island (we'll be departing on a Thursday) we've received advice that this is a little risky as you cannot get advance reservations and we dont want to be closed out. We have found an option for a private transfer Korcula - Dubrovnik. Does anyone know if a similar service exists for Lastovo?
4. Any other pros and cons for these two islands would be great. We just want to relax (the rest of our trip is mostly in cities, so this is our "chill out" time). We have no interest in nightlife or a "scene"...just looking for beautiful surroundings, as quiet as possible but with decent transit connections.
Thank you!

I only know Korcula, which I found extremely relaxing. Reminded me of time in Hawaii. But that was in mid-September. Here's info about Korcula beaches: http://www.korculainfo.com/beaches_korcula.htm

Lastovo is a beautiful island, but I think it is not suitable for children. From the town of Lastovo to the nearest beach you must hike about one mile downhill. Also on Lastovo is hard to find a beach in the classical sense, which is partly furnished and suitable for children.
On Lastovo is all uneven, quite rocky. Maybe Lastovo will be less crowded, but for a family vacation I definitely advise you to go to Korcula. If you decide to go Korcula, I reccomend you to visit Lumbarda. Very nice place on the island, with beautiful sandy beaches. Ideal for small children. http :/ / www.korculainfo.com / lumbarda.html

I second the suggestion of Lumbarda. We found it just lovely, with nice beaches and friendly folks. It is not far from Korcula town by bus, and the ferry from there to the mainland at Orebic runs frequently. Many locals take the bus from Korcula town to Dubrovnik on the ferry every day. I don't think you would fail to get on this one. Not as fast as the catamaran, but a sure thing.

I may have been a bit optimistic, Hilary, about the ferry. I looked it up, and there are only two buses a day from Korcula to Dubrovnik,so my "frequent" comment was not quite true. The trip takes about three hours.
