Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me out with my road trip? My bf and I are planning on driving from Montreal to PEI and Cape Breton, between August 10-25, 2013.

We are both in our late 20's/early 30's and we are both like to travel on the cheap. We don't wanna spend more than 70$ a night on a room but we don't want to end up in some bed bug infested room. We are planning on camping and any recommendations for B&B's in between our roadtrip?

As for activities, we are foodies and we like going to the "local" spots, breweries, pubs, boardwalks, scenic drives, beaches, hiking, fireworks and waterfalls. Any festivals?

This is what I have:

Montreal to Moncton, NB (visiting my friend for 1-2 nights)
- I've been before and I'm taking my boyfriend to Osaka hibachi (I loved it!), pump house brewery and my friend is walking distance from the casino.

Moncton to PEI (2-3 nights)
- Camping, motels next to beaches or rustic cabin ideas? Festivals? Foodie stuff?

PEI to Cape Breton
- My grandmother was born there and this is the reason why I am visiting.

- 1-2 nights camping - Cape Breton Highland National Park?
- 1-2 nights motel/cabin or B&B?
Activities include: Cabot trail, artisan trail, Glenora distillery, skyline trail, Ban Falls?, any ideas?

Cape Breton to Halifax for 1 night
- Decent hotel ideas in town? Walking distance to fun stuff, bars,shops, restos?

Halifax to The Oven's, planning on camping 1-2 nights.

Then I am heading back to Montreal

Please help me with some ideas?! Thank you for your time and consideration!!!

I read this a while back, and found it to be so filled with the right ideas, that I wasn't inspired to add very much.


I am not a Foodie by any stretch, so I can't help there.

With regard to PEI, I think you might do well to limit that to 2 nights, and use the other night elsewhere. In a perfect (affordable) world, a 2nd night is very sensible for Halifax.

I'm not sure of the <I>budget challenges</I> you'll face for lodging in Halifax. I wonder if there are less pricy spots over on the Dartmouth side, AND whether the passenger ferry across the Harbor could be of any use for visits to central Halifax.

At any rate, I think you have a very good sense of what you're doing, and perhaps that is why nobody has responded.

With as much time as you'll have in Moncton, be <b>sure</b> to go and see Hopewell Cape (if you didn't do so before).

Several universities make their lodging available during the summer break, and some of them are less than $70 per night. The latter part of your trip might be after they stop taking summer guests, though. Many sites say "May through August" but don't give a final date.

The University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown offers summer guest housing "from May until September", according to their website, but it doesn't say the exact dates. A double room in Bernardine Hall is $69 plus 18% tax. Every two dorm rooms share a bathroom. http://conference.upei.ca/online-booking

Thank you for the replies..so I booked my camping and hotels/motels and they WEREN'T cheap as I thought they would be.

- Moncton 3 nights(we extended the stay to an extra night bevause our first night we will be exhausted from driving)

- PEI 2 nights at Cavendish Beach (I'm really shocked with all the extra fees we had to pay just to camp)

- PEI Summerside 1 night in a motel(70$ cheapest place I found)

- Cape Breton 3 nights in a Motel (I found in Igonish 125$)

- 2 nights free in Cape Breton my do camping or stay at relatives.

- 1 night in Halifax (100$)

Then maybe The Ovens or back home...

Now I was wondering if there is a ferry that goes from PEI to Cape Breton, if so how much is it? It would save us gas and driving time.

PEI to Pictou, NS is the only one...


It may still save you driving time, and gas...


The $43-ish <b>Toll bridge</b> leaving the island is the <I>alternative</I> to the ferry, no matter the cost.

The ferry seems to be $67.50 per this website:

No ferry from PEI to Cape Breton, just to Caribou.
