Better choice: Burgundy or Loire Valley?

My husband and I are fortunate enough to be returning to France. We love Provence and will spend some time there but have 3-4 days to enjoy another region. We love historic towns, architecture, beautiful landscape and vineyards. Thanks for your help.

Given your preferences the two areas are probably equally perfect for you. The wines of Burgundy are more famous but there certainly are vineyards in the Loire. The Loire affords greater opprotunities for castle hotel stays. Have a look at some destinations in the picture books Rex always advises people to use and see what strikes your fancy.

my husband and I loved the Loire Valley. We are returing to France in October and are very tempted to go back, even though we have many areas yet to explore. I think it has all of the ingredients you mentioned. We bought and brought back a bottle of champagne on our honeymoon from one of the castles which we popped open on our 5th anniversary. It really was the best I have ever had. I think that if you go, doing a guided tour through the castles lets you in on so much more of the history that is truly fascinating.

We did a 1 week small tour thru Burgundy and it was awesome--I loved it much better than Loire-

Some of the wineries actually had a tiny restuarant where you had lunch and tasted wines while others were similar to those in Napa as far as tours and tastings.

The restaurants in Burgundy have a LARGE amount of 2-3 Star Michelin STARS and so they are fantastic.....

A really quaint town in Burgundy is Avalon- we loved it there-
Also Beaune, Dijon==all were great.

Plus there are some fabulous Chateaus in Burgundy to stay in......

On the other hand, in Loire Valley, we stayed at the Chateau de Rochecotte and they are able to assist in hot air ballooing and the views from their balconies is terrific....

From a taste standpoint, the red wines in Burgundy are great===some of which you will never get in the US

We prefer Burgundy to the Loire. We enjoy the villages more than the chateaus. Our favorite is Vezelay which is close to Avallon. We love staying there. We have been twice and would go again!

The Loire Valley isn't really about beautiful landscape, nor about beautiful historical villages. Once you've visited the castles, there isn't much left. You could think it compares unfavourably with Provence. Burgundy has more to offer, IMO...

I just returned from a vacation of 6 days in the Loire and 4 days in Burgundy. I much prefer Burgundy. While the chateaux are absolutely wonderful, it is Burgundy that has the beautiful countryside and the charming little wine towns. Be sure to see Fontenay Abbey. Also, the medieval towns of Noyers and Chateauneuf-en-Auxois were among the highlights of the trip. I stayed in Beaune which I enjoyed, but if I had it to do over again, I would stay in one of the little wine towns on the Cote d'Or between Dijon and Burgundy or stay in one of the medieval villages. If you need more information on the area, feel free to email me.

Janet I would love to know more about Burgundy. What is your email? We want to do 2 days Paris, Burgundy OR Loire Valley for 3 days and than go down/across to Ile de Re. I am not sure how close Burgundy is to that area but that was the original plan. Everyone seems to love Burgundy more than Loire Valley!

If you visit Burgundy, consider a visit to Beaujolais in southern Burgundy. It is a beautiful place of rolling hills and small villages with great restaurants and charming wineries.

Burgundy without even a second thought. If you need tips on what to see and do in Burgundy then have a look at this thread:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic...-Burgundy.html

That being said if you are going to Île-de-Ré (I just spent a few days in that area) then the Loire is much closer to Île-de-Ré than Burgundy. If you need tips on what to see and do in the Loire then look at this thread:

You didn't mention if you will have a car but I would strongly urge you to get a rental car.
