Shoe Trouble
OK I am headed out on a backpacking trip in June. I plan to eventually end up living somewhere abroad so I'll be gone for a good amount of time! My first planned stops though are Iceland, Norway and Germany. I'm having no problem thinking about jut brining a few items of clothing but I am seriously struggling with my shoes!! Here's what I'm thinking:
Sneakers: I'll be hiking a lot in the first two destinations and it seems silly not to have sneakers for this!
Flip-flops/shower shoes: because who knows...
Now for the dilemma:
I want a sandal type shoe to walk around in during the day touring cities but I also want a shoe to go out in, im talking looking hot in the clubs. I love heels so I am seriously struggling with this. Do I give up my heel for a comfortable walking shoe so I don't end up with 4 pairs? I do have a comfortable heel that could double as an airplane shoe, but that means 4 pairs, is that too manY?!?! HELLLP!

I would never travel with heels and I don't think you need them for a 'backpacking' trip. Find the best looking pair of flats you can, like a fancy "ballet flat" or something. Dress them up with your top/skirt for wearing to clubs but they'll be a lot more versatile beyond that.
Sneakers on your feet on the plane, flip flops and flats in your backpack.

I usually take 4 pairs.
1. Tennies for hiking/walking/biking
2. Flats - decent to walk in that can dress up or down with jeans or skirts.
3. Flipflops or similar sandal - also decent to walk in. I had a cute leather pair with a terrific cushy rubber sole that I loved - they wore out though.
4. Some sort of heel for going out - usually a wedge due to cobblestones - sandal or closed shoe depending on the time of year. I am a total shrimp, so I like to have at least 1 pair of heels with me
All my shoes (except the heels) have to be good for walking at least a couple miles.

Backpacking with more than two pairs of footwear seems to go against the spirit of the thing, but it's your trip so do whatever makes you happy.
Heels are probbaly a bad idea unless you are accustomed to walking on cobblestones/uneven surfaces.

Take 2 pairs of shoes.
Hate 'tennies'. There are many makes of comfortable, stylish shoes that will take you from the plane, to the street, to dinner.
Depending on where you're going, cobble stones will kill your feet in flats.
A low sandal for evening or around a pool/shower area wont take up much room in your case.

Oh boy do I understand your dilemma! I usually carry three or four pairs of shoes on each trip, sometimes slipping one in the carry-on backpack I take on the plane. I always wear my most bulky shoes when flying, too.
Maybe you can just buy some of those hot heels when you get where you are going are know for sure you will need them

I take 3 pairs of shoes. Comfortable walking/hiking shoes sneakers or hiking depending upon if I'm going to take on a hiking trail.
A couple of pairs of flats, one dressier than the other.
(flip flops for pools they take up an inch lengthwise in the suitcase, I don't wear them out.)
