Are there any windows that can be opened or open areas on the Vistadome or Expedition trains that would make it easier for taking photos without getting reflections through the glass?

Also, I've read that it is better to try to sit on the left side of the train when traveling to Aguas Calientes and on the right side on the way back. When you book your tickets can you request a side of the train or choose your seats?

As I recall the only windows that opened in the cabins were those small ones at the top which would be useless for photography but some of the windows on the entrance doors slid down, although from memory some people tended to hog these so you may have the be 'firm'. If you have an SLR then I would take a polarising filter which, for me, helped reduce reflection in such instances.( it is also essential at these altitudes as you will get some REALLY deep blue skies.)

From memory, all seating is reserved in advance, if not, I imagine there would be carnage at embarkation! Take loads of memory, you will need it!

In the morning the sun will be behind you as you shoot outside the left side of the train, so there will not be too much glare.

Not sure about the front seats but we were able to book the second row but that was in person in at the office in Cusco. It was a few years ago but as I recall we chose that particular train because of the seats available. We are visiting again later this year and so I have had look on the website and it i could get to book the train and then it asked me for my cc details, maybe once you have given those you get to select seats?

If the front seats are really important to you then maybe an agency would be the best bet. I felt the best shots were achieved leaning out of the window.

I hung out the windows on a trip in Aug 2012, to take photos with an SLR camera. Between Ollantaytambo and AC the right side is the snow-covered mts and the left side is the river & the valley and opposite mts. Not sure which one I would choose, if I could.
I don't think you can ask for a specific seat.
Don't forget to wear sunscreen, hat & sunglasses on the train. The seats are assigned and there are high windows that curve around the top. During the day, it's possible to be in the sun. Obviously not a problem at night or early morning.

Was there last week but they took my entire ticket at boarding so this is all by memory. We had assigned seats on the Expedition train going to MP, with the river on the left side, and the windows do open about 12 inches enough to get photos outside the window. You are correct, there are more photo opportunities being on the left side. Coming back we happened to be on the right side but it got dark before Ollyantatambo with cabin lights on the entire way so seating really didn't matter.

yes, you can pay with some Visa cards (verified by Visa). The trick is to switch over to the Spanish language version of the website after generating your reservation code.
