Garmisch-Partenkirchen in a day trip?

This is my 1st time planning a trip with my family. We are visiting Bavaria this mid May and ends our trip in Zurich. We shall be taking train/bus all the way.

We plan to travel to GaP by train and reach by 11am from Munich using the Bayern ticket. We hope to make a dash to Zugspitze Peak. Since we are visiting Neuschwanstein Castle the next day, we intend to stay overnight in Hohenschwangau. If we take the train, we have to transfer at Reutte and take a bus to Fuessen. Is there a bus direct to Hohenschwangau from GaP in the evening? Where can I make the booking?

My dilemma is whether we can make it in a day trip. Please advise... Thanks.

Bus timetables are at: http://www.bayern-fahrplan.de/auskunft/fahrplanauskunft
I understand there are no direct buses and even with a single change the trip is quite long.

Hi tropica,

Also remember that the Zugspitze is a further 1h15 from Garmisch and that trains run up only once an hour. If you leave München at 09.32, you won't reach the Zugspitze until 12.38 If you leave the Zugspitce at 13.30, you'll be back in Garmisch at 14.50. That won't leave you any time at all to see the town itself.

Have fun as you plan!

I fear your trip plans will likely prove far too much in too little time and will make it difficult for you to really take in the experience, perhaps leaving you feeling punished by the experience.
If you do go as planned have a means to stay in touch with current weather sources. Mid-May can still produce some less than ideal weather conditions for the peaks.
Lovely mountain, I proposed at the Cross on the summit of Zugspitze.

I'm not sure you are best served by public transit based on the itinerary that you are looking at. I think renting a car would be much more convenient - and probably not any more expensive for several people.

Hi again,

I disagree that the answer would be to rent a car for this day. After all, that would be adding some noxious fumes to the beautiful countryside you are wanting to see!

The best solution imo would be to slow down and give yourself time to see some things and experience some things rather than trying to do it all in a day.

Hi all! A day trip is too rush for us after all. Thanks for pointing out. I followed asps's link and there is a direct bus to the castle at 940am reaching 1146am. Any idea how much this will cost me?

If we take this ride, any idea where to store our luggage? Should we take a room in Hohenschwangau for the night?
