Denver Area To Do (couple) - Side Trips Too

My husband and I (without our school-aged kiddos!) are flying in to visit my sister (who will have just moved to Denver) this July. I'm just beginning my research for what we'll do during our 6 night visit but thought I'd start here to hear your must do list for this time of year (summer). We plan to catch the Cubs/Rockies game on Saturday night and are interested in Denver activities as well as must do side trips (love beautiful scenery, nice hikes, national parks, etc.). We are open to spending a few nights outside of Denver too when my sister returns to work after the weekend.

This is an oft overlooked museum and that is a shame. It is really well done and we enjoyed our visit:

Use the View By State and run through the responses to several very similar questions. Many are oriented to the winter season but the same areas work just as well in the summer. Estes Park and Rocky Mt Nat Park will be overrun with tourists at that time of year so I would suggest going further into the mountains. Perhaps as far west as Glenwood Springs and Aspen. There are a number of loop tours that you could do in those areas. You might look at a couple nights in and around Frisco or Breckenridge with day trips from there. Great bicycling trails. All of the major ski areas have extensive summer programs to entertain and attract tourists. You will find plenty to do and see. I am sure your sister will have some ideas.

Hard to write a guide book for you. So as you get some ideas come back with specific questions.

I would head up to Rocky Mountain National Park. I like hiking Sky Pond Trail(also goes by The Loch).

What part of Denver is your sister? You have a nice amount of time and can easily do some day trips.
I would do a day trip loop by going up to RMNP, through the park on Trail Ridge Road and back down Route 7 to Silverthorne and back to Denver--or go on West to Aspen or Glenwood Springs to spend a night and do some sight seeing around there.
There are some good threads available as was pointed out.
Lots to do in Denver. The Botanic Gardens are very nice.

Spend some time in Boulder, of course.

I think you mean 40 to 9 to Silverthorne.

July is a busy time in Rocky Mountain National park, but still very worthy of a visit. An incredibly scenic drive in RMNP is Trail Ridge Road which connects the east and west sides of the park. A nice side trail off that road is the Ute Trail.

If you want to venture into the park for hikes, Emerald Lake is a beautiful lake:

If you're looking for a long day hike, Chasm Lake and Sky Pond are spectacular hikes. Chasm Lake starts at the same trailhead as Long's Peak, so you have to get there early in the morning to claim a parking spot.

Another area you may want to consider visiting is Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs:
