Night trains Paris - Rome/Venice
https://www.thello.com/
There are no night trains between Switzerland and Paris (3 hrs by train)resp Venice, but tons of low cost flights.
Trains wihtin Switzerland: every 30 to 60 min

Zurich - Interlaken
Interlaken -Lucerne
Lucerne- Paris (Night Journey)
Paris-Rome (Night Journey)
Rome- Florence
Florence-Venice
Venice-Zurich (Night Journey)

If you mean overnight train Lucerne to Paris it no longer runs - the Zurich/Lucerne overnight train being scrubbed a few years back.

Zurich-Interlaken
Interlaken-Lucerne absolutely do not have to be booked in advance - no savings I believe and you can always get tickets - always - now if you want to take the official Golden Pass train over the Brunig Pass Interlaken to Lucerne then you may want to book that but again reservations are not required and there are regular trains on that route every hour

No overnight train Venice to Zurich

Paris to Rome overnight train - www.thello.com is the official site.

Trains involving Italy - www.trenitalia.com. Again though you can save money by booking early - way way early like as soon as they come on the system - 90 days out or so to guarantee a discount fare but you will always be able to buy full fare tickets for any day once there - rarely do all of the many trains on a certain route sell out and in worst case scenario you would have to go first class - very unlikely to sell out.

For lots of great info on European trains check out these IMO fantastic sites - www.seat61.com - great info on online discounted tickets; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

You can;t just assume there are night trains between any two cities- usually there aren't.

Between Venice and Zurich you best option gets into Munich at 6 am and you have an hour's wait for a train on to Zurich. Other trains have 3 or 4 changes.

Lucerne to Paris is only 4 hours and something even with one change in Basle with no overnight trains.

You need to look into this in more detail to see what real options are.

Also, there is no reason to make a gigantic circle - you should fly into your first city and fly home from your last - to avoid wasting time circling back. Buying multi-destination tickets should make this easier and cost no more - although I assume it is too late for that.

There is no practical pass that covers all of your trips - although you may want to look into a Swiss pass for that portion of your trip. Trips within Italy are probably cheapest bought as individual tickets - but cheapest in advance if you can commit to specific trains - although you may be too late for the best discounts.

Yes a Swiss Pass can be viable even if in the country only a few days - you can also use it to go to Basel and the French border or get a Pass 2 discount on trains from Zurich, Bern, Lausanne or Geneva - all served by French TGVs - Pass 2 fare - discounted over full fare.

Last year I would have said to look at the Eurail Select Saver Pass - a 3-country pass valid in Switzerland, France and Italy but France decided to opt out of that pass so a Select Pass can no longer have France on it - and as the Global Eurailpass is so so expensive no pass for you - except as noted perhaps in Switzerland if traveling on trains or boats much at all.

nytraveler: why do you give such ironically misleading information? Sunim asked in a polite manner and I cannot understand why you want to make o fool of him.

Maybe nytraveler just meant Milan and not Munich, even though the earliest train I can find arrives at 08h25 ( not 6am) in MIL from VCE.

> why you want to make o fool of him.
??? I don't find ny's post impolite/rude myself. ???

The language itself is not rude/impolite.
But the fact that nytraveler wants sunim to go into the wrong (geographical)direction.
If you asked for the best way to go from Geneva to Nice, I wouldn't tell you to fly via Barcelona

Like last week I would once again disagree with that. You give great advice and are a font of knowledge about (presumably) your country but lose the abrasive attitude that turns off folks. Well that is my advice.

nytraveler I believe was trying to incorporate an overnight train ride that the poster wanted to do between Italy and Switzerland and taking the overnight train to Munich would be the only way to do so.

Sorry. I REALLY thought that nytravller (after having seen the incredibly strange itinerary of Sunim)was laughing at Sunim, dass er ihn zum Narren halten wollte. I just wanted to defend Sunim; that's all.

I think you saw that the connection suggested by nytraveler means Venice dp 20.57 - Zurich ar 11.44. The first morning train from Venice (change at Milan) arrives at Zurich just 1 1/2 hrs later (but you have already had lunch in the dining car, whereas, coming from Munchen, the first thing you will do is to look for a restaurant).

Other solutions:
Venice dp 16.20 - Zurich ar 23.29
Venice dp 19.50 - Milano 22.25/7.10 - Zch ar 10.51

Venice dp 19.50 - Milano 22.25/7.10 - Zch ar 10.51 - so they sleep in Milan's train station and only gain 2.5 hours over traveling Venice to Zurich in the day time?

Was not trying to make fun of anyone. Just pointing out that overnight trains are often not the best option - and for some routes they do not exist.

I did not suggest that the OP take this route - but that he look into the real options based on actual schedules rather than simply assuming that whatever he wants will exist when he gets there.

"so they sleep in Milan's train station"
There are good hotels just a few metres from Milano Centrale station, for example Hotel Michelangelo (often good deasl via booking.com)
I suppose they have to sleep somewhere in any variant.

Nytraveler: sorry, now I understand what you meant. When I saw Munich, I thought it was a kind of joke (and, that's my mistake, I didn't realize that the Munich - Zurich railway line will again be open in May for a few weeks).

So they take a 2.5 hours train ride late at night from Venice only to sleep in a Milan hotel then get up so early as to catch a 7;10am train to what gain 2.5 hours - no that in nonsense to even suggest over a straight Venice to Zurich day train.

What's your problem, Palen?
I proposed 2 solutions, as close as possible to the timetable of the night train which was supressed a few years ago. With the first one (dp 16.20) he looses the whole afternoon whereas the second one has not this disadvantage.
I'ts up to Sunim to judge what is suitable to him, not to us.
We don't know whether he prefers to stay as long as possible at Venice or to arrive as early as possible at Zurich.
He can just arrive at Milan 1 hour earlier or leave Milan 75 min later if he wants to sleep more than 7 1/2 hrs.
For that, he must ask neither you nor me.

Annis:
if you want to go from Grindelwald to Florence and back the same day, you will have a problem.
Otherwise open http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en
and enter
from Grindelwald
to
Firenze
for any date before June (official Italian timetable change, although almost nothing will change really)
