Italy - Where to Eat? (Rome, Positano, Ravello)

Hello! My husband and I are going to Rome, Positano and Ravello in about a month. We are both 31 years old and from New York City, so we truly appreciate a good meal from living in the epicenter of good food! I have celiac disease and need to eat gluten free, but have been told that this shouldn't be a problem in most restaurants. With that, the last time I was in Italy, I fell victim to a lot of the tourist traps and would like to try and avoid them at all costs. If anyone has any noteworthy restaurants for us in any of the 3 cities that we are traveling to it would be great! And yes...we are already doing Mamma Agata's cooking class in Ravello! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Here's a link to a recent restaurant post for Rome - it mentions an app I was happy happy with when we were in Rome earlier this year (EAT ROME).

Also - where are you staying in Rome/budget?

The incidence of celiac disease is apparently quite high in Italy and many menus reference gluten free choices. The two hotel breakfast buffets we saw had clearly marked gluten free offerings. Here's an interesting link

Have a great time

I was really only 1 happy with the app and should use the preview function, obviously.

I like both Eat Rome and Rome for Foodies. Also check out www.parlafood.com for great Rome recs.

In Rome we love Roscioli and Pizzarium.

In Positano we had a great meal at Tre Sorelle, located right on the beach. When I return in June I will have dinner at Bar Bruno. Also, highly recommend lunch at Da Adolfo on Laurito Beach (take the boat with the red fish on its mast from the pier in Pos).

I also had a good lunch at Cumpa Cosima in Ravello last year.

Thank you all so much! We are willing to spend money on dinners...living in NYC, we are a little jaded with prices of meals. Please give any suggestions that you feel are memorable meals! We are treating this as a second honeymoon, so we are looking to eat and drink well . Thanks!

Should have posted this as well - 2 links to our blog with several Rome restaurants. Also you might enjoy seeing EATALY Rome .... 4 times bigger than NYC's (pics on the blog)

Thank you, Elizabeth! I don't know that we will want to do EATALY in Rome, buttt thank you so much for your links!

Jmkay: Palazzo Murat is where we are staying!!! I guess we'll have to eat there .

Thank you again for all of your recommendations! Keep 'em coming!

Allison

Ps. We are also going to Mykonos and Santorini if you have ever been there and have excellent suggestions too! I was going to do another post for those though in a day or two. Thanks again!

Roscioli, better for lunch IMO, also has a fornaio around the corner from the deli/restaurant, with lots of good stuff to pick up.

Le Mani in Pasta, Via dei Genovesi, 37 in Trastevere. A fun local-type place.

L’Arcangelo, via Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli, 59, in the Prati, also a more local-type place.

Il Bacaro, near Piazza Navona, good food but I like the other places more. If you order pasta, they will bring out a sample amount of your dish for your dinner companion to try.

Renato e Luisa, via dei Barbieri, 25, in the Ghetto. Slightly more upscale, also more local. (Can you tell that's the type of place we like?)

Antico Arco, Piazzale Aurelio 7, near Porta San Pancrazio. We went here to celebrate DH's 50th. Beautiful location, very nice dinner.

Il Drappo, Vicolo del Malpasso, 9, near Piazza Navona. Very romantic, especially good if you like seafood, Sardinian food.

La Florida - very, very good pizza by the slice, by Torre Argentina.

It's my own biased opinion, but I like the more mid-range places in Italy; at the more high-end places, I start feeling like I could be eating anywhere in the world. (But we have eaten at a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome, so I could tell you about those, if that's the kind of place you're interested in.)

Lexma90 - THANK YOU!!! So...we are definitely "foodies", but we aren't snobby. We will go anywhere if you tell me that the food and atmosphere are worth it. I would say we aren't picky, but I have to be with my celiac disease. Otherwise, we are just looking for great food / great ambiance. If you told me that at the Michelin-starred restaurants is where I'd find it, I'd go there. If you told me it was at the cafe on a random street with folding chairs, I'd go there! Just want to get the most for our money! My husband has never been before so I really just want to have wonderful, memorable dinners with him!

For a romantic start to an evening, take a taxi to Hotel Il San Pietro and have bellini on the veranda and watch the sun set over Positano. Fabulous.

It is based on Elizabeth Minchilli's recommendation that I am eating at Bar Bruno in Pos in June. She is also a fan of Da Adolfo and has a post about it as well.

In Ravello I ate at Cumpa Cosimo. It is not fancy but is family run and has wonderful food. You will probably see it in lots of posts on this board if you do a search.
