Advice on Almalfi Coast itinerary
Hello, everyone! We have 10 nights total and are flying into and out of Naples in September. So far this is what we have planned and some of the main things we would like to see and do. After reading this site, it looks like Sorrento is a better base for Naples and Pompeii so I'm rethinking the amount of days in Positano.
5 nights Positano (La Fenice)
- go to beach, Ravello, Almalfi
2 nights Capri (La Minerva)
- see Blue Grotta, hike, relax
3 nights Sorrento (Hotel Anitcha Mura)
- see Sorrento, Pompeii, Naples
Should we spend one or two more nights in Sorrento and one or two nights less in Positano? Would appreciate your comments or thoughts.

Great pictures! We can't wait to see these sites in person. Yes, we have researched quite a bit and appreciate your feedback since you are very well respected on this site.
Do you suggest leaving Capri and dropping our luggage off at the hotel in Sorrento (if they allow) and then taking train to Pompeii the first day? Second day Naples, third day relax in Sorrento? This is my concern as it may not be enough nights in Sorrento.

What time does your flight arrive? Depart? I would base my decisions on order of towns on that.
You could cut a night in Positano and add to Sorrento if you think you need it. You can easily visit Amalfi and Ravello same day. If you are traveling by bus, you have to go to Amalfi to get the bus to Ravello.

I'd take a night from Positano and add it to Capri - IMO there is plenty to do for 2 full days (well, that assumes long, relaxing lunches!) But one day maybe for the Blue Grotto and Anacapri and then another walking out to Villa Jovis? and the gardens near Capri town. Sorrento, 3 nights OK - one day for Pompeii and one day for Naples. IMO there is not a whole lot to see in Sorrento but it does make a good base for other explorations.

We rented a boat from Positano and drove ourselves to Amalfi, then took the bus up to Ravello, (and later went to Capri the same way) - it was $$, but wonderful fun to go in and out of the coves and look at the coast from the sea at our own pace. Went to Netta's in Ravello - the first time we were there was 15 years ago, she was still there & still lovely. For Capri, we took the boat, went around the whole island and swam through the green grotto. Floated around & went to the blue grotto, which is interesting, but we thought it a tiny bit of a tourist trap. You have to lay down almost flat in the boats to get through - prepare to get wet on your seat and possibly on your back. Went to lunch then headed back leisurely to Positano.
We later did 2 nights on Capri. It was enough for us. We did Pompeii on the way from Rome from Silver Star (I think) motors.
Can't say anything about Naples when they weren't picking up trash. So we didn't stay to look around. There was 4-6 feet of trash along every street, it seemed (4-6 feet high and wide). It was a mess.

kybourbon - our flight arrives into Naples around 11:00 am so we planned on having a driver take us to our hotel in Positano. Chances are we will be tired so thought we would not overdue the first day.
We will take all advice into consideration as we finalize our trip. I will be asking more questions as we get closer.
Thank you all!

I agree to three nights on Capri. La Minerva is heavenly and there is plenty to do on Capri. You will want to slow down and just take it all in. Don't add more to Sorrento! Walk of the Gods is amazing!

I too would want a third night on Capri. We took amazing hikes. If you are interested, get a map or a separate guide book for walks. We walked out to a modernist villa that was quite a trot from Capri Town, but well worth the effort. Capri is gorgeous with plenty to do.

I have a feeling we will wish we had stayed on Capri longer so I am definitely considering contacting hotel and checking if another night is available.
Jean - I feel the same as I read all the wonderful destinations all the Fodor's folks have visited.
Thank you all!!

I don't know if I was clear - if we hadn't circled the island and done the grottos prior to arriving in Capri, I would have wanted three nights. We changed our itinerary to stay there for 2 nights after visiting for the day from Positano.
