My dh is traveling to Stuttgart and Frankfurt next week for business. I will be tagging along and doing day trips while he's working. Then we will travel on to Amsterdam for vacation. I have researched various restaurants, but would like input from Fodorites. My dh especially loves Sauerbraten, so would be thrilled to obtain a recommendation for that. And as long as I'm asking, any recs for a café with good espresso, nice atmosphere, people watching, where locals might go - for me, while he's working

Gabrielle - you should say what part of the cities you'll be staying. You may not want to go to the opposite end of Frankfurt for a cafe.

Here's a thread with some restaurant recommendations. I ate at Paulaner twice and enjoyed the food. Get there early as they get very busy.

Hi all. Just have been really busy and frankly, I don't know of any restaurants in Frankfurt that serve Sauerbraten. I can recommend typical Frankfurt places though:

For people watching, just a cafe along the Römer or the Paulsplatz. I like Cafe Stern across from the Paulskirche. If you are there on Thur. Fri. or Sat. go to one of the open markets. The Klein Markt Halle has a little restaurant upstairs too, called the Markt Stubbe that offers pretty good food in a very traditional atmospher.

Thanks Aramis! I didn't think to look at Zum Storch. Have never eaten there, but they have a good reputation. If the weather is nice, they have a nice terrace out in front. It is located right between the Kaiserdom and the Main river.

In Stuttgart, I highly recommend that you try the local swabian dishes like maultaschen (giant stuffed tortellini), zwiebelrostbraten (braten with sauteed onion sauce) and kaesespaetzle (cheese pasta). They are all great and easy to enjoy.  

FRANZISKANER:
I have been to Stuttgart several times and the one place that I always go to is the large outdoor terrace restaurant FRANZISKANER just outside of the Markthalle (indoor food hall) southern door and across the alley from the ARCHE restaurant (which also serves decent traditional german swabian food and good steaks). I always prefer the Franziskaner for its  convivial outdoor atmosphere, great price/quality ratio and  the service is better and more german proper than at the ARCHE (which can be a good alternative to Franziskaner):

My other favorite place is the Graf Zeppelin hotel (very personable service & staff) right across the street from the train station. The hotel has 3 good restaurants including a fancy gourmet restaurant OLIVO, but I also enjoy the simpler restaurant Zeppelin Stüble:

I used to make a point to eat there (especially if I'm staying at the hotel) because I really enjoyed their typical german fare and the servers always remembered me and treated me like family from year to year.  However the last time I was there (17 months ago) the food was just OK not as great as in the past and they have different servers.

By the way, FRANZISKANER is located on Sporerstrasse between Markthalle and the men's clothing chain store Hirmer, very close to Breuniger which is a very good department store in Stuttgart.

Another good place that I have gone for brunch/lunch is AMADEUS, it's located just north east go the Markthalle in a nice traditional building, good food and nice atmosphere. They also have a good brunch buffet on weekends. http://amadeus-stuttgart.de/mittagessen/

Upon the recommendation of another Fodorite I once ventured out of the downtown into the Bohnenviertel area which is just across the freeway like Hauptstaetterstr/Konrad-Adenauerstr from Amadeus (if you dare cross the busy highway), it is supposed to be a good place to eat cheap old fashioned German food, however it is also the red light district which means the alleys are populated by aggressive dark ladies of the night from Africa even in the afternoon when I was there, so stay clear off the alleys. I was rather turned off by the area but there were a couple places worth looking at if an old traditional cafe appeals to you. One place is this : http://www.zur-kiste.de/speisen-getraenke/

The Bohnenviertel area is safe, but the ladies are out like DAX said. They are more obvious closer to that one church on the corner. I ate one time at a restaurant that is part of a former tower, the Weinstube Schellenturm, http://www.weinstube-schellenturm.de/. The food was delicious and the outdoor patio wonderful in the evening.

If you wish to cross Konrad-Adenauer Straße to visit the Bohnenviertel there is an Ubahn Station where Planie -> Charlotten Straße intersects Konrad-Adenauer. You cross the busy street underground in the station. We are returning to Stuttgart ourselves and are likewise thankful for the restaurant recommendations.
