Will have a 24 hour layover in Amsterdam in August
In addition to a good nights sleep, the four adult travelers want a chance to get a flavor of the city. Looking for advice on where to stay, the 1 or 2 things to see or do, not to miss place to eat.

Check out Anthony Bourdain's 36-hour layover in Amsterdam on his show called, appropriately, "Layover." The show should spark some ideas. We loved Amsterdam and highly, highly recommend getting out of the crowded center ASAP when you get there. We stayed in the Jordaan neighborhood and loved it. The Red Light district, meh....

This question has been asked a hundred times here on Fodor's. Suggest you use the Search the Forums: box above and type in hours in Amsterdam. For a place to sleep are you thinking about a hostel or a five star, or something in between. There are hundreds of places to stay in Amsterdam.

Taking your suggestion, searching for hours in AMS I obtained some good information. Most recent replies are 2010.
In asking for a "place to stay" my goal was to get some suggestions on location, central city, airport...?

Stay in the city. The airport is only 20 minutes by train from central station.
Go to the Netherlands forum at tripadvisor.com and look up the "Bidding on a 4 star..." and "Bidding on a 5 star...". Start at the ends of the threads as they are many pages long... you will learn how to get a 4 or 5 star hotel in central Amsterdam for about $100 US a night.
Things to see? Anne Frank's house, Canal cruise, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, red light district...
