NYE in Auckland

We arrive in Auckland on our first visit to New Zealand on New Year's Eve . We will fly out to south Island the next day.
We shall have arrived after a 12 hour flight and will have crossed all the time zones from the U.K. in 4 days.
What is there to do in Auckland on New Year's Eve? Can you suggest a place with character for one night at about 150 pounds sterling which can be reached easily by public transport from the airport?
We'll return to Auckland later on and so will see what we want to then
Many thanks

New Year's Day is the public holiday so most things will be open New Years Eve: Museum, Art Gallery, shops.

It might help if you convert your hotel request into NZ dollars, then it's easier for people to answer.

I don't think that my original question was very clear.
We will be tired when we arrive and I was wondering what celebrations there are for the public at midnight. It may well be that we shall be totally tired out and asleep or it may be that the time difference has us awake and ready for a few hours out.
I'm looking therefore for a hotel /B&B within walking distance of such a place-on the assumption that roads and so on may be closed off to traffic. The conversion appears to be 274.97 NZ dollars-I'm not sure how much difference the .97 makes!
Thank you for your response

I'm with you now. The Bolton has character and it's well within your price range. It's at the top of the hill (so not on the water) but it's a relatively short walk down to the waterfront. If you end up sleeping it may be an advantage to be away a bit from the fireworks.

My search for the Bolton is only turning up a hotel in Wellington. Do you have a website please?
With thanks
