Rental cars on ferries in Croatia

Rental cars on ferries in Croatia
I'm planning to rent a car in Croatia through Auto Europe and there was a note on the web-site indicating that you need permission to take the car on a ferry. We do plan to take the car to Hvar, so we sent an email about it. Auto Europe responded that they'll check with the car company (Auto Europe is kind of a broker, not the actual rental company), but even if the car rental company says ok, the insurance will not be in effect during that time. We'd be responsible for the entire cost of the car if anything happens.
Is this typical? I would presume many tourists with rental cars take them to the islands. Anyone have personal experience with this? Any recommendations on what we should do?
Thanks,
Karen

I'm curious to hear the answer, but depending on your total itinerary, you could consider just renting the car while on the island. On my visits, I have always found getting from place to place on the mainland simple and convenient, and the only places I ever wanted or needed my own wheels was on the islands. I'm sure many people take the rental cars on the ferry and you'll get positive input, but I would find the proposition hairy myself--I've watched people pulling cars on to many ferries, and it is mayhem! You also have the option of using catamarans if you are free of a car.

I am going to be in Croatia for 3 months and plan on renting a vehicle but plan on renting accommodation on Brac. What are my options re insurance while traveling back and forth between Split and the island? I am new to this so is this too much of a different topic from
