Anyone have suggestions for where to stop en route from Annecy to Antibes - for lunch or for the night, traveling by car.

You realize, of course, that it's a 6 hr trip if you never take your foot off the accelerator. With stops for gas, lunch, pottie, & "deviations" - I would plan on at least 7 1/2 hrs door-to-door.

Take the "Route des Grandes Alpes" and stay overnight in Briancon.

Annecy - Albertville - Valloire - Briançon, but you must like mountain driving going to and going from Briançon.

Thanks for your input. Looks like the route will need to include Monaco and Nice on the way to Antibes from Annecy or Tallories. We would like a route with the least twists and turns in the mountains - any suggestions? What would be your opinion about stopping for the night in a place like Cuneo or somewhere else that would be scenic but not too far from a major highway and at least half way (preferably further)to Antibes.

If you don't like twists & turns - stay out of the Alps. The most interesting part of the Route des Grandes Alpes is on twisty/turney roads near Bonneval, the Col d'Izoard, St Veran, etc.

Why does the route "need" to go through Nice & Monaco instead of just "by" them on the autoroute?

I think you need to spend some time with www.viamichelin.com to get an idea of how much time you'll be spending in the car on various driving routes.

My error - Going by Monaco and Nice on the auto route would be preferable. Thanks for the link to the Michelin maps.

My recollection is that the road from Cuneo to the French coast via the col de Tende is very twisty.

We've driven about half that route from Cuneo to the coast, and we also took a train from Nice to Tende & back. As Michael stated - it is twisty in places. Saorge and Tende are interesting villages to visit.
