30th Anniversary in August - Where to go? Ideas, please!

Hi there,

We would like to take a week to celebrate this milestone. The anniversary is actually in September, but since I'm a teacher, we would like to go late July or early August. We will be flying from Logan, and would really like to go to the Carribean, but naturally, we are concerned about hurricane season. Newport, RI would be lovely, but it is too close, and too expensive in the summer for what we can easily get off-season! We've always wanted to go to Charleston, SC, but I think August would be dreadfully hot and humid. The Florida Keys appeal to us (especially Little Palm Island!), but we would still have the hurrican threat. Would Sonoma be too hot and crowded in August? Is Niagra-on-the-Lake worth the long drive from Boston - and special enough for a 30th anniversary? . Any advice, comments, and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

DW and I spent our 30th in Montana in and near Glacier NP.
Our 35th was in Yosemite.
The only winery tour we ever went on was near Hammondsport NY at Bully Hill. Mr. Taylor explained why he can't even put his name on his wine. The NY Supreme Court said he could not even put his signature on the label.

what are the things you really want to do? I can't tell from your list of possibles...beach? clubs? fine dining? historic sites? outdoor activities? What makes a place special to you? A plush resort? a charming inn? a great view? Do you have any particular restrictions regarding cost or distance? We need more info to make a useful suggestion.

Do you have a fall break from school? You could go to Charleston in October. We went there for our 20th anniversary and October is a great time for South Carolina. We stayed on the Isle of Palms at Wild Dunes-it is very near Charleston. August will be a very hot time for anywhere in the South.

Hi folks,
Thanks for the replies.
nlg: I do have a long weekend in October, but I think it's hard to fly into Charleston. Is it a long drive from the nearest airport?
c_c: A plush resort with great views makes it special! We will also enjoy fine dining and some site-seeing. We are willing to splurge, but don't want to splurge in New England on something we normally due out of season.
tf: Poor Mr. Taylor! Sounds like a fun time; thanks for sharing!

Niagara on the Lake is lovely, but you won't want to spend a week there. You could combine a trip to Niagara on the Lake with time in the Finger Lakes which would be on your way to NOTL. Not sure what your interests are. If you like to spend time in cities then Toronto and Buffalo (great architecture) could also be stops.

For that time of year, I would vote for Oregon or Washington. Mount Rainier, Olympics, San Juan Islands, Seattle are all great(I especially like Mount Rainier).
In Oregon, Crater Lake, Coumbia River Gorge, The Coast Portland all great.

Perhaps San Francisco and down to Monterey and Hearst Castle would be good too.

Florida Keys would be very humid and I think mosquitoes are bad there(I know they are in the everglades) during summer.

Glacier wouldn't be a bad bet as indicated.

I've seen a few friends' photos from this place last summer and it looks incredible. For luxury, natural beauty, landscape, romance in August I'd go here!! http://www.fairmont.com/lake-louise/media/guest-photos/

Charleston is easy to fly into and has great airfares since SW flies there. I wouldn't go there in Aug.

In Aug. I usually stay away from the east and gulf coast. The message above showing Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies is one of our favorite vacation destinations. I would definitely head west.

My late husband and I spent our 30th Anniversary in Vail, Colorado (it was July). We stayed at The Sonnenalp for a few days (lovely) and then moved to The Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek. We had a great time. Colorado is spectacular and the weather was divine. We enjoyed this trip so much, we repeated it two years later.

The other trip that I think would be great for a 30th is a cruise to Alaska. I have done this twice since my husband passed away and it is something I wish we could have done together. Alaska is amazing.
