"That's Right, Alex!" My Jeopardy Experience (with bonus Mickey and kimchi)

It's finally time to share my Jeopardy! experience. Obviously, I won't comment on the actual taping until I am legally allowed to do so, but I'll start with the preliminaries and share what else we (Mr. Pickle, PickleDude, and I) did while we were in southern California.

If you want, you can see my "hometown howdy" and a commercial for this week (I don't think it has spoilers) at http://www.jeopardy.com/showguide/thisweek/ I am in the commercial, and frankly, it's weird seeing myself .

First, let's take a little trip back to September, shall we?

Our daughter and son-in-law from Missouri spent a few days with us early in the month. The morning they left for home, I was doing laundry when the phone rang.

"Hello, Lee Ann? It's Glenn Kagan from Jeopardy. I'm just calling to check on some of the details of your address and personal information."

Since I was invited to audition in May, I've spent a lot of time at www.jboard.tv, so I knew when someone from the show calls to double-check your information that I was getting THE Call to be on the show.

Once he finished with the basics, Glenn said he was calling to invite me to come to Los Angeles and tape the show on October 15th and 16th. Like most game shows, Jeopardy tapes two days a week, five games per day, every other week or so.

I managed, barely, not to shriek in his ear. He gave me the basic information I needed - when to arrive, what to bring, hotel discount information, etc. - and said he would email me a packet of legal forms and other info I would need to fill out and send back. Glenn also reminded me not to tell anyone other than immediate family and my employer, if necessary, that I was going to tape the show.

We also talked a little about the show experience and the interview spot. Glenn suggested I come up with a "hometown howdy" (a brief TV spot plugging myself and the show), and that I review the "fun facts" I had filled out before the audition. Alex Trebek is given three of the facts to ask contestants about, but occasionally he likes to ask about something they haven't written down on their info card. In that case, Glenn said, the safest thing to do is smile, respond, "That's right, Alex," and then ad-lib a response.

While Alex did ask me about something I had written down, I figured "That's right, Alex" was the best way to start my response - hence the report title.

I've got the show on my official calendar for tomorrow night! I love telling people that I "know" someone on the show! Are you having a viewing party at home?

You all can see me tomorrow (Tuesday), January 8th.

Getting on the show is, to some extent, a matter of luck. About 100,000 people take the online test every year, and you do have to score well enough on the online test to make it to the next level.

From that pool, about 4000 people are invited to audition, and 300-400 of them will be asked to be on the show.

If we can't wish "good luck on the show" as you know the results already, what can we wish you? Have a great TV-watching party?

Just curious..did Jeopardy pay for your plane ticket and hotel? I was on Jeopardy about 40 years ago, and it was great fun. Hope you had good luck.
