Another year, another trip to NYC. What do I do this time?

I am going to NYC at the end of the month for another birthday weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations to make it a good one?

Much to my disappointment, there will be no jazz at Lincoln Center that weekend, the Loewes is closed so no Michael Feinstein, and Alvin Ailey has nothing scheduled.

I am hunting for theater tickets. Picnic got good reviews, Nice Work if You Can Get It got okay reviews, and the Mystery of Edward Snood is mixed. Does anyone have anything they'd like to add?

I also want to take advantage of Restaurant Week, but have no idea where to start.

I will continue reading trip reports, but was hoping you old-timers (people who have been here for years and see this post annually) will have some recommendations.

Thanks!

-EM

Take a look at off-Broadway and off-off Broadway.

Go on-line for Time Out New York and also look at what is being performed at the Joyce.

There is something Jazzy going on at LC that I must investigate further. There is a string quartet playing on Sunday morning which sounds lovely.

I am not interested in the Matisse exhibit at the Met. The MoMa and Guggenheim look like their exhibits are abstract modern stuff, so lukewarm maybe. I do like the Neau Gallery (sp?) uptown, so I will keep that in mind. But you know...I think I'd rather do something a little more interactive. I really liked the NYPL's map exhibit last year, and the LE Tenement Museum.

I guess I'm just looking for something different, something only in New York. I really wanted an incredible dining experience. I ate at Asiante last year. I wanted to try the tasting menu at 11 Madison Park but that's been discontinued. I'd love recommendations for something not necessarily expensive, but something I can't find in Baltimore, Washington, or even Chicago. (Maybe San Fran!)

It will probably snow that weekend, and I can watch unaware people step off the curb and into 2 feet of water and laugh like a loon, but I was hoping for something a tad more enjoyable.

Regarding "Picnic", my husband and I saw it during the first week of previews, and enjoyed it very much. At the time, I thought that the two young (male) actors were a little weak, but would probably improve during the run. Many of the women were already giving impressive performances.

Have you seen the new-ish Islamic wing (November 2011) at the Metropolitan Museum? Try to plan your visit to include a docent-led tour; it would make your time there a bit more interactive as most docents welcome questions.

Had lunch this week at Del Posto. They do a $39 3 course prix fixe that's really excellent in a gorgeous space. There's a LIVE pianist at lunch time. I've lived here my whole life and dont recall any other restaurants that have had that. Really lovely! If I had it to do over again (and I will!) I'd have one of the pastas as my main course. Had just a taste of the pumpkin cappallacci (small ravioli) and it was diVINE.

See if anyone you like is playing at 54 Below, a newish supper club. http://54below.com/wordpress/?page_id=1023

Check out the Museum of Art &. Design. Doris Duke's Shangri-La is terrific. http://madmuseum.org/

Rogers & Hammerstein,s Cinderella starts previews on Jan. 25 and is getting good buzz. Annie is such good fun and a great score. The young actress playing Annie is a star. Check the reviews on didhelikeit.com

What about a pizza tour? There's one in Brooklyn so you get to see a few different areas asliceofbrooklyn.com and another in Manhattan scottspizzatour.com

Accomplicenyork.com is fun too- part tour, part street theater, part scavenger hunt.

You can see the biggest hits on Broadway during the slow months of Jan and Feb as you would be lucky enough to get the tickets. New York is a holiday destination for from early December through the start of the next new year.

Another something different that's only in NY - the MoMath (yes, museum of math) just opened. Very interactive and has some fantastic exhibits if you're even only a bit interested.

Does anyone know of a coffee-tasting bar? Or a coffee bar tour? I would like to improve my coffee palette.
