I will be flying into Rome mid May and Departing from Venice end of May.
What are the MUST SEE attractions in between those two cities? also would it be worth to fly into Greece for 3nights before heading up to Venice? instead of being in Italy for the full 2 weeks?

Stick to Italy. Read some guidebooks. Between Rome and Venice you have a large region to explored with some wonderful towns and cities.

How did you decide to fly into Rome and depart from Venice? Do you not have any idea what there is to do in Italy? Get some guidebooks and read up. Get maps. Go on the internet. There's a whole world between Rome and Venice, and a whole lot of info about it in books and online.

Have you considered flying into Venice and out of Rome? The plane schedules are better that way as most flights from Venice leave very early in the morning.

How did you decide to go to Italy? There is much to see and do and 2 weeks is not nearly enough. Guidebooks and the internet can help you narrow down the possibilities. It is hard to suggest an itinerary for someone who hasn't shared anything with respect to their own likes and wishes for the trip.

I don't have people to travel with...i'm pretty much the only one in my circle of friends/family that has flexiblity to do so, so when the opportunity arises I tag along. Thats how I came about to go to Italy.

I decided to fly into Rome on a Tues Morning and work my way up to Venice and fly out from there.

I'm more of a walk around sight see type of person, I know there's so much to see but its hard to narrow it down.

Timewise would 5 nights in Rome, 4 nights in Florence 3 night in Venice work?

Hi there, your last plan is good, if possible you definitely should reverse it though so that you don't have to be up at 3 am to catch your flight home. If you are able to catch an afternoon flight home from Rome that gives you an extra half day.

In Venice we bought a 24 hour vaporetto pass and during that first 24 hours went to the island of Burano which is very pretty. We also used the pass to ride the entire length of the Grand Canal a few times just for the fun of it. After the pass expired we walked. We bought reasonable good sandwiches from the train station in Venice to eat on the train to Florence. Trains were the only places where we didn't think much of the food.

Florence is a small town and you should find it quite easy to navigate. Make sure you head out for a walk in the evenings which is when I think Florence is at its' most beautiful.

Hi Cathies, I will look into that Vaporetto pass and Island of Burano sounds like something i would like to do.

The reason I am doing Rome first is because my Fiances Mom is in her 70s and her dream is see to see the Vactican and attend a Mass see the pope.. so i thought before doing anything else we should do that. I dont mind the morning flight back home.

Where are you flying from? Although many flights leave Venice airport very early in the morning, if you are flying on Delta to JFK, the flight is around 1pm and you dont have to be at the airport at the crack of dawn.

You need to decide for yourself what are your "must see and do" . Do you like museums ? historical sites? shopping? etc.

It would be a good idea to go to your local library and see if they have some travel books on Italy. It will be a lot easier to read and decide than searching a lot of sites online... and the guidebooks all have website information as well.

You will be able to travel by train from each of the three cities. Within Rome there is a small subway system and a bus system, which you may use depending on where you are staying or going to visit.


You can purchase tickets in advance to many sites which will save you time waiting on line just to get a ticket. However I read in today's NY Times that the Vatican will stop selling tickets online as of Jan 13 and you will have to pay in cash for tickets to the Vatican museums/Sistine chapel. This is due to banking issues within Vatican city.

Is the Mom going on to Venice with you? If not, OK, If she is, then do reverse the trip or find a late flight out of Venice. It is hard for some folks to get up at 3 or 4 am, and it doesn't make sense to pay for an expensive night in a hotel to sleep only 3-4 hours. I had to do that once on a tour that had a last minute change. It was absolutely awful! Will never do it again and would have a fit if someone else booked it that way for me without telling me if they had a choice.

Starting in Venice is a nice way to start the trip anyway. See if the Mom will go for that.
