hello everyone. does someone know anything about the greek island of rhodes? been there? i would love to get some information. i want to go there at end of feb/beginning march for four/five days. any information, ideas etc would be very welcome.

yztme, I have been to Rhodes (4 days) but I defer to my betters --several Destination Experts on the Trip Advisor Greece Forum who have repeatedly given excellent overviews of Rhodes, plus advice on 3-5 day trips around the island. These are people who go to Rhodes year after year, not just folks who stopped here for a day on a cruise. Rather than cut & paste their excellent advice, i direct you to TA.

However, I sugguest a reality check. Have you checked weather averages? Are you expecting a sun 'n' fun getaway? You do not give any info about yourself, but by clicking on your name I guess that you are from US or Canada. Some N. Americans are under the impression that the Med/Aegean is like the Caribbean -- sunny, warm and swimmable in Feb. NOT. Athens is about the latitude of Cincinnati ... Rhodes of course is warmer and is the sunniest of the larger greek isles, but Feb-March is rainy & cool (see link for monthly averages) http://www.wunderground.com/NORMS/Di...&Units=english
-- and of course, the sea is freezing. I'm a determined swimmer, but I can't get in the water in Greece till May 12-15 at earliest.

Of course, if your visit is mainly for sightseeing, you'll have a lot of fun. Just bring a jacket and an umbrella, and enjoy!

I recommend hiring a car, Rhodes is very easy for getting around, the coastal road all around the island is good, so are many of the inland roads.

You will be there when the main tourist resorts will be very quiet or closed, but plenty of places to visit all the same. The weather will be cold & wet some of the time, but maybe some sun for a few hours each day. At least being one of the southerly islands it will be better weather than some of the others!

thanks for your replies. i am aware of the weather situation, but that doesnt bother me, although i do hope it will not rain. thanks about the car rental idea as i wasnt sure about that.

The roads will be relatively quiet at this time of the year and driving is easy. Unfortunately you're going to find that many of the restaurants, bars etc., even some hotels will be closed as it's way out of season. They'll mostly reopen at Easter.

It was a long time ago but we regretted not being based somewhere in Rhodes Town as we spent most of our time there.

Lindos was worth a visit - though we were there in the summer.

I recommend you find a place in Rhodes Old Town, it is closed to traffic and very charming. We stayed at a small hotel, Nikos Takis, right next to the Palace of the Knights and you can spend days exploring the town. There are some bigger hotels outside of the historic area which would not be to our liking. We found the bus travel to work fine and never rented a car. A trip to Lindos is great, we were there in beach weather, but walking around the village would still be fun. Perhaps a car would be advised for the time of year you are going. We also took a boat trip to the island of Symi which was memorable. Rhodes is a very interesting and pretty island.

Keith, Cousin Muffy, and took a holiday in Rodos in July, 2007. We stayed at the Rodos Park Hotel which is situated just outside the Amboise Gate of the Old Town.

This hotel is very posh and has a beautiful swimming pool.

I think it would be a GRAVE mistake to travel to Rodos in Feb or March. That is not the season for an island holiday.

We were in Rhodes two years ago. It's worth spending a bit of time in Rhodes Old Town - it really is gorgeous, especially when all the daytrippers clear out in the evening and you have the place to yourselves. We stayed in the utterly gorgeous guesthouse Hotel Attiki - http://www.hotelattiki.com/en/home-page-hotel-attiki/ . By US standards the rooms are small but the location can't be beaten and the hosts are excellent at recommending good places to eat. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

After that we spent a few days in Lindos. Again it's gorgeous but it gets a LOT of daytrippers and a huge amount of English tourists. The town itself is very unspoilt and there are a lot of excellent places to eat. We stayed initially in the Three Brothers Studios - http://threebrothers-studios.com/ and then moved on to Villa Koki - http://www.villakoki.com/ .

Both places were very basic but clean, comfortable and safe ... and cheap (about €50 per night). Villa Koki was superior because of the super view of the sea in our opinion.

We liked both beaches in Lindos but St Paul's Bay really is worth seeing. If you're a fan of the old movie The Guns of Navarone a lot of the locations will be familiar to you as it was filmed around Lindos.

We used public transport or taxis all the time. Hope this helps!

I have learned to check the date of the original post (OP) before replying, especially if the latest post looks like spam.

I wish Fodor's would do as some other travel forums and make a thread "read only" after a certain period of inactivity. After all, what is the point of replying when the OP has already completed the trip? <i>Worst of all, many of these old threads contain time-sensitive information which can be misleading.</i> If a topic is important enough, a new thread can be started.
