New York City, best area to stay in

Hello! I am going to New York city in March and am looking for an apartment to rent. What would be the best areas to look in? One week trip with 7 people.

Most apartmental rentals for less than a month are illegal. Others will offer specific advice but Radio City Apartments and the Affinia group offer apartments that are legal.

The tourist sights are scattered trhoughout Manhattan and the subways, buses, and cabs are excellent as is walking. Thus it really does not matter what neighborhood you stay.

For me, Central Park West. Nice area, not crazy like Times Sq., easy bus or subway ride to Times Sq. and theater district, walking distance to Lincoln Center and Central Park attractions, good local restaurants.

Please do NOT do this.

Short-term rental are illegal. And even if the chance of your being caught are small (but neighbors can complain and you don;t want to be removed as trespassers) the chance of the apartment being a SCAM is significant.

This is something the City is cracking down on - and you really should look at the apartment hotels (legal, meet safety and fire codes) instead.

As for where to stay - it depends on the ages of the people and their interests. If there are any kids I would go for the upper west side, which is family friendly. If all adults I would do midtown east.

We did stay at one of the Affinia properties this summer and it was great. We got the advantages of a hotel, like a knowledgeable, helpful concierge, as well as a full kitchen and lots of space. And when I say full kitchen, I mean a stove with real burners and an oven, a full-sized fridge and microwave. We stayed at the Affinia Dumont, on East 34th St., just a few blocks from the Empire State building.
