Time to process US passport

For those of you who have renewed passports recently, how long did it take from the time you mailed your renewal info in until you got your new one? Did you send it expedited? Does anyone know if they cash the checks as soon as they receive them or if they wait until they've processed and sent the passport out?

Two data points for you: We sent my mother's in for renewal (regular processing) in early October and she got it back in just over two weeks. I sent mine in (expedited) at the end of October and had it back in eight business days.

Re: the check, I mailed in my passport on Oct 26, and according to my bank records the check cleared on Nov 13. No idea if this is standard for processing the checks, though.

I did mine in October also. It took a little less than 3 weeks with routine processing. However, the check cleared the bank really fast in less than a week.

Can't comment on timing for renewal - but you must have the funds in the account as of the day they receive your request. If not - it may just be returned to you.

And I know it's none of my business - but I can;t imagine anyone with the few $ for a passport renewal would have the money to travel abroad.

Thanks all for the info. I'm not going to worry yet. We sent it expedited about 3 weeks ago and the check hasn't been cashed yet. No problem with funds in the bank. Just wondering if the fact that they haven't cashed it could mean it hasn't been received.

Thanks ms_go, I did and found out what's what. Embarrassed to say that we sent the $60 per passport for expedited processing but never found the info about the basic $110 per person charge for the actual passports. Rectifying post-haste. Should have everything cleared up and passports in hand well in advance of our Jan. leave date. Thanks to all for your useful info.
