rip to Germany

Hii.. I am planning a trip to Germany by the end of the year. And I am looking forward to visit some smalller towns instead of Berlinf, frankfurt and all. These places have their own charm and best preserve Germany's architectural heritage, as I have heard. Could anyone suggest me some?

I got few in my mind... what about these: Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Weimar, Wernigerode .....

Would really appreciate few suggestions

Have a look at the Michelin Green Guide for Germany and go to the map. There are many gems of small towns (places like Bad Wimpfen, Hann. Muenden, etc. etc.) and Michelin makes them easy to track by their star ratings - - places given two or three stars will be really worthwhile. If you have a car, you can map out a gingerbread trail across half the country, taking the pretty Landstrassen all the way, as opposed to the stau-ridden Autobahn.

Duesseldorf? Stuttgart? You mean Germany's 6th and 7 the largest cities with populations over 600,000? I would double the information you received for those choices against your stated wishes because there is a disconnect.

I will just name a few to add to your list near Wernigerode; Quedlinburg, Goslar, Hannoversch Muenden, Detmold, Hameln.

If it is architectural heritage you want to check out the German "Framework" Road;

I echo many of the suggestions so far. A few months ago I visited Marburg, Hann. Münden, Goslar, Quedlinburg, Wernigerode, Erfurt and Würzburg. All were fantastic.

All the above suggestions are good. Weimar is somewhat of a cultural capital - if you go, you need to find out about Goethe and Schiller, Lucas Cranach, the Weimar Republic, the Bauhaus movement, all before you go. That way the city makes sense. Also visit the Duchess Anna Amalia Library for superb Rococo interiors. Don't go thinking you'll get splendid Fachwerk (half-timbered) houses, there's only a little of that there. Many 18th century buildings, pretty squares, good gelato .

What about Dinkelbuhl? Wonder little town, beautiful architecture. Near Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

I stayed in Stuttgart this past summer for 9 weeks while leading a summer camp at an international school. I LOVED the town and surrounding area. It is a wonderful place to live. The city itself sits in the bottom of a bowl surrounded by mountains on the sides. There is a lot to see and do in the surrounding area, with the small towns within an 1-1/2 hours from Stuttgart. It would be a nice place to stay and explore the area. I recommend it. Many by-pass it, but it reminds me of where I currently live- Houston, TX. Houston doesn't appeal to a lot of people, but there is so much to do locally. Maybe not a place you would think to go to, but well worth it if you give it a chance.

You will love the villages in Southern Bavaria, Oberammergau, Fussen, Mittenwald, Garmish, Bertschesgaden and although not as small, Salzburg.

I'm another fan of Stuttgart, it's a beautiful city. You're friend may be the only person who likes the place b/c she's one of the few who have been there. Or they want old architecture but Stuttgart has great modern architecture. The MB museum and the Staatsgalerie make it one of my favorite museum cities.

I didn't care for Celle, it seemed like a long drive and then it reminded me too much of Disneyland; all paint and no substance.
