What is the best web site to book hotels in Germany?
Hello, I used Travelocity and Expedia to search for hotels in Germany and cannot find hotels in small cities. What are the best web sites to look for hotels in Germany? Thanks.

Booking.com has provided me some hotels that are in or close to some small towns between Trier and Salzberg (basically southern Germany). Also, if you are fluent in German, most towns have a list of hotels if you type in the name of the town.de, like "Berghaupten.de".

You don't even have to be fluent for this - if the town's web site doesn't have English option, some rudimentary German should be enough to navigate the site (maybe with a little help from Google translate, Bablefish, or similar site). I manage and am FAR from fluent.
I also use Trip Advisor to see what hotels in a town have been well-rated by other people - then check out the hotel web site and reserve directly.
Another option is Google Earth with the hotel option turned on - you can see where different hotels are located, and often times go directly to the hotel web site from Google Earth.

HRS may have a few more hotels listed in Germany, but Booking.com is the most comprehensive (selection), user friendly, site for European hotel booking. It should probably be ant starting point and then the reults can be cross referenced ib HRS for Germany, or Venere for Italy, etc..

I use www.hotels.de as first choice - - they have an incredibly large selection, and they also tend to have hotels that slash their rates (especially late in the game) - - a lot of them you don't even need a credit card guarantee. I have to admit to being an unabashed hotel rate-change hopper. Both on hotels.de and bookings.com I'll keep checking and sometimes get an absolute steal of a price drop at a better place about two weeks in advance.

One more thing (as November_Moon mentioned) - - if it is a REALLY small town and you don't mind staying at something mom & pop, searching for the local civic website will usually lead to a list of accomodations (like here is for Bacharach, which lists everything from hotels to Zimmer Frei to camping: http://www.bacharach.de/gastgeber/uebernachten/ ). One basic search is to type in the name of the town and the word "unterkunft" - - then, at least in Google Chrome, you can click to have the pages translated entirely into English.

EasytoBook http://www.easytobook.com/ is a really good site for many European cities. The rates are usually the same as booking.com or venere.com, but sometimes they'll have deals the others won't.

I usually look at some guidebooks recommended hotels, check Trip Advisor and often ask for suggestions here on Fodors. Then I look at the websites of the ones that meet our needs, decide on one and make reservations online. Also used www.venere.com a couple of times a few years ago and was pleased.
