Masai Mara grass levels

I am thinking of returning to Mara Plains next month. I would be interested to know (from anyone who has visited in the past 2-3 weeks) how high the grass is at the moment ? W e went in February when it was unusually high - whilst game viewing was good, it would have been even better with low grass !

I'll be off to Tanzania/Kenya next week, returning sometime mid-Nov, and will be in/around the Olare Orok area, so should have something to report.

I've been often in the Mara in Nov/Dec and found the grasses rather low as the herds had just finished chomping them down. This year seems some of the herds departed early and unless there's been lots of rain these past few weeks, can't imagine the grass is all that high.

Important though, even those years when I've visited right after the 'long' rains - end-May/June - while there were some areas with high grasses, most others not at all, especially on the conservancy, where Mara Plains is located... often Olare Orok and Mara North have short grasses most of the year, but for a few areas within each where they might be higher. For sure, even early-June you don't miss the herds of ellees, giraffe, hippo, buffalo... but can drive right past that darn lion sleeping away the afternoon

But like anything else in Africa, who ever really knows.

Sandy,

Where are you going first: Kenya or Tanzania? Did you get your Yellow Fever jab, do you need it if you are going to Kenya first? Please advise, it will be good to have this information.

baraca - I'm heading to Tanzania first, so technically do not require the YF jab for entry arriving from Western Europe and the States. However, I've had the jab, and have my certificate. Then onto Kenya, where the rules on the books are somewhat the same, but not adhered to as when entering Tanzania from Kenya. Hey guys, TIA... each country makes their own rules/regs and hope they don't change them while you're in transit

If only entering Kenya, from Western Europe or US, the YF jab is not required.

CaliNurse - Where in the Mara? Everywhere. Question should be, 'where will I be laying my head every few nights?" Well, Saruni, Elephant Pepper, Porini Lion and Ol Seki. This in addition to a few days each at Amboseli and Samburu.

Oh, to be in Afree-ka and be busy, busy, busy... simply wonderful.

Grass levels will be short, as the Wildebeest should have left (for the second time this year) by then. Should see some great Cat sightings.
