New Years in Iceland
Hi guys
We have decided to spend new year in Iceland and have just booked our flights and hotel package
and I just have a few questions for you all!
We will be flying from Gatwick to Reykjavic with Iceland Express on 28th Dec and arrive at 16:00(ish) what would you advise for this evening? I was thining of planning a northern lights trip (that way if it is cancelled due to weather we have plenty more evenings left!) Oh and we are staying 5 nights!
The next day I was thinking we could explore Reykjavic, see the museums etc - does any one have any not to be missed sights/museums etc in Reykjavic? Any suggestions for restaurants/places to eat?
Other than this I have no actual plans as yet, just a list of things I would like to do:
Golden Circle - what tour company would you recommed? I would rather be in a smaller group if possible!
Horse riding - I love horses and like riding to see the sights - where would you recommed around Reykjavic?
Jokulsarlon - is it possible to get here during the winter? Is it worth travelling the distance during one day?
Blue Lagoon - should we go here on the first day after we arrive or on our last day?
Anything im thinking of doing that isnt worth it? Or anything I should be thinking of doing that ive missed?
Also what should we plan to do for New Years Eve?!
We fly home on the 2nd at 9:00am so no time to do anything this day!
Any ideas for itineries would be greatly appreciated!
Oh and we're staying at centerhotel skjaldbreid if that makes any difference!

Jokulsarlon is a very long a day trip by road and I don't think it's advisable in winter. Most tours spend an overnight there.
We didn't get there in the summer because a bridge was washed away!
The tripadvisor forum for Iceland is very active with local posters so I recommend you ask your questions there.
Bear in mind that the conditions for the Northern lights might not be perfect on your first night and decide if it's worth it to you to spend multiple nights (hours) outside in the cold in the hope of seeing the phenomenon.
I'd probably save the Blue Lagoon trip for the last day unless you feel like you need to unwind on arrival.

Blue lagoon is worth a trip on any of the days you are there, however note that it is on the way to the airport so conceivably, you could go there right after you land (luggage lockers available) and then continue on with the shuttle to central Reykjavik to your hotel.
We used Reykjavik Excursions http://www.re.is/ for our tours to Gulfoss and South Coast. I really cannot recommend the South Coast tour enough. The drive is beautiful and scenery changes literally every fifteen minutes. You will wind up going to a rocky beach that HAS to be seen and you'll even get to go on a glacier.
On New Year's Eve I would stay in Reykjavik itself. This is a major party town and people are serious drinkers. There will be a plethora of activities, guaranteed. Stay away from the rotten shark.
Iceland is one of our favorite destinations in the world. ENJOY!

I went to Iceland this October and did a so called City Break package with me based in Reykajvik and day tours to the coutryside from there. I would definately recommend the Golden Circle and the South coast
I had the chance to go to Jokulsalon (the glacier lagoon) and did a boat trip there which was great and if they are still operating tours there I would recommend you do it.
Also for the Blue Lagoon I would recommend to do it by the end of your stay because it is a great place to relax and reflect on your stay before you depart back home
