London - women's hair salon referral
Hi - I have a couple of formal work related events to attend while in London (Mayfair area) this October. I like to travel light and would rather pay for a couple of blow outs than fuss w/product and hair tools. Toward that end, I'd greatly appreciate recommendations for local hair salons near Mayfair and/or Knightsbridge. Also, any advice regarding price of service and tipping would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Look for a Toni and Guy salon near your hotel. There is one on the Brompton Road in Knightsbridge.
I used the one in Sloane Square a couple of times and also one in Exeter.
Both were excellent.
Can't remember what I paid and I think I tipped ten or fifteen percent.

I was also going to recommend Toni and Guy - they are a chain, but a consistently high quality one. All their stylists are trained at the Toni and Guy Academy, so you can feel pretty secure in their abilities. Their prices are fairly reasonable, which is not what you could say for many salons in Mayfair.
If I am ever in a strange town and need a hair cut, I always track down a Tony and Guy.
10% tip is pretty standard for the stylist, plus a couple of £s for the person who washes your hair.

what you are looking for is a "blow-dry" if you want to look on the website for prices. "blow out" isn't rude but unless they have a lot of american customers won't be readily understood by the staff.

I also had one other thing you might want to ask so you can plan in advance. When I lived in London for a year a few years ago the first time I went to a salon for a color it was required that they do a skin patch test on me 24 hours in advance of the actual color. I understood it was some kind of local health regulation. Not a bad idea of course. And it might apply only to color and not other products like styling products. But when you make an appointment you might want to ask about any such thing just so you can be sure you can schedule accordingly.

Thank you for your advice, I will be sure to ask for a 'blow-dry' and interesting patch test info, seems like a good idea. Again, thank you for your consideration of my request for information. I am going w/Toni & Guy Mayfair thanks to the great advice rec' here.
