Please note it is spelled Gibraltar. Southern Spain is the confluence of many cultures and there are many fascinating places to visit with Sevilla and Granada among the most popular. I suggest you buy a guide book and see what may be of interest to you. It might be best to stay over night somewhere.

There are numerous fascinating places within a couple of hours' driving time from Gibraltar. The coast has some fine beaches and towns, in both directions, and inland there are white villages and historic cities. Seville and Cadiz are easily reached, as are (a little farther) Cordoba and Granada.
Or there are numerous fast ferries from Algeciras, Tarifa, or Gibraltar itself to Morocco; possible as a day trip but highly rewarding for weekends or longer journeys.
We did a brief trip to Gibraltar and the area early this year; here's the trip report: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ruary-2012.cfm

The lines to go in and out are hours long so you may want to spend at least a couple of days out in Spain.
When did you last go through? We went through a few years ago and it was hellish; this year it was nothing. One factor is that many many Spanish people are using the airport, so there's a lot of cross-border traffic (i.e. cross-runway) for that.

The time to cross the border will depend on the state of the Gibraltar/Spain war. Just recently the time was 3 hrs. Let's hope they won't entirely close the border as they did in the past when in order to get to Gib from Spain you had to go thru Morocco.
