The Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine, Tx is well known for it's holiday lights, shows, etc. It is a sister property of the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Either should be lots of fun.

New Orleans is a great place. They have all kinds of events in the French Quarter and outlying areas. Concerts in the Cathedral, caroling, street performers dressed in character, special menus at area restaurants, etc. We always spend at least one weekend in December and have always had a great time. Very reasonable hotel rates as well. The weather is very temperate and can even be quite warm at that time of year. Check out this link for more info.

You could spend your entire trip *in* the Opryland Hotel if you wanted to - it's that huge. They have a big "Country Christmas" program every year. Louise Mandrell has been the star of the show for years, but I think last year was her last, and it looks like Lorrie Morgan is taking over this year. Of course, that last sentence may mean nothing to you if you weren't been a country fan in the 70s-90s.

The hotel is in walking distance of a huge mall with an IMAX theater, the ICE exhibit, and the Opry House, where the Rockettes will be.

State pride requires me to suggest Florida: there are any number of resorts up and down both coasts (though I prefer the Gulf side) that would provide holiday spirit in big heaping doses. Really, it just depends on what you want. I saw a TV special about the Gaylord at Christmas and it made my teeth ache, and being stuck in a resort like that would not be for me--so I think New Orleans sounds great. But if you want organized activities in a confined area, the Gaylord may be just the ticket. Good luck!

I'll toss Charleston, SC, into the mix. It's beautiful at Christmas, and churches have music services open to the public.

NewbE, I actually feel the same way! But they get a TON of business every year, so it must suit a lot of people just fine. I went with my mom to see the Rockettes a couple of years ago and that was good enough for me!

Asheville, NC would be my choice. If your budget allows, I would go to the Grove Park Inn, http://www.groveparkinn.com/. Lots to see and do in the area.

Great suggestions. The Biltmore House is gorgeous decorated for Christmas and it would be wonderful to stay at the Grove Park Inn. Charleston or Savannah would be beautiful too. New Orleans would be nice. If you want a wider range of options you could go to Atlanta and see a variety of shows and holiday events, including Snow Mountain (for tubing), their Christmas village, the Nutcracker at the Fabulous Fox, etc. There would be a wide range of lodging options in and around Atlanta. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Now to decide....we have done Williamsburg & Asheville around Christmas. Nashville is probably the most centrally-located for family. The kids would love it, but I think I'd prefer New Orleans or maybe Chateau Elan.
