Hairdryer for use in South Africa

I am traveling from the USA but my daughter has a European hairdryer (220-240V) that she bought for use while traveling in Europe (Italy, Germany, Sweden). Can I use that hairdryer in South Africa? I am thinking that I can use it and won't need the converter that is necessary for USA hairdryers and all I would need is the adapter plug. Anyone know if this is correct or not? Thanks!

I would reconsider the need to carry a hair dryer. It adds weight to your luggage and worry about the adapter plug or converter. Most places where you stay will either have a hairdryer in the room or one available at the desk. In all my travels during the past six years, the only accommodation where neither hairdryer nor electricity was available was a jungle camp in Zimbabwe. Forget the hairdryer; remember the washcloth! I agree with Zambezi. You will find hair dryers (unless you are in camps where they are not to be used) but wash cloths are sometimes hard to come by. That and a small bit of conditioner in case.....

Yes, that hair dryer will work in SA (with the appropriate adaptor). Depending on where you stay, you may not need one, but the rest camps in the SA National Parks, for example, don't provide them.

Have a wonderful time!

Thanks for the tips! Got the wash cloths packed! Glad to know the European hair dryer will work.

Absolutely wash cloths as, surprisingly, many places don't provide.

My travel hairdryer is dual-voltage, but also so small and lightweight, that I take it everywhere and just make certain to have the proper adapter plugs. When you get used to your own, can be frustrating using another and by the time you become familiar with it, time to move onto the next hotel/lodge/camp. Your decision, of course.

Instead of washcloths, take those 99 cent polyester shredded wash balls on a rope you can find at Target,Walgreens,Walmart. You put one in a ziploc and it dries alot faster and is more sanitary than carrying around wet washcloths all the time. Most of my flight attendant friends use these all the time for traveling overseas every week and they are so much better to use!

Thanks for more replies! That's what I love about Fodor's I have the washcloths and they are so cheap I just leave them at the hotel when we leave. I do have one of those scrubby 'balls' and it is great....do keep that with me in the ziploc bag. Best news is about being able to use the european hairdryer. Thanks everyone!

a lot of good guesthouses and B&B provide washclothes too! And hairdryer. So no need to take them!
