I haven't flown anywhere in six years, so can someone tell me the rules for snacks and food to carry on.It will be a very long flight we are going to Hawaii.

No rules about solid food that I know of, we bring cheese and apple, crackers when we fly to Hawaii. There are rules about liquids, but we always get something from the cart, free juice, water,coffee. Never drink sodas.

the only rules are about liquids - no more than 3 oz in one plastic see through bag per person.

Airlines no longer feed you except in business or first class and they only take credit cards for payment ob board for snacks and sandwiches.

The rule about liquids are NOT about what you can carry on.

They are about what you can carry through security. You can buy a gazillion bottles of water, soda, etc after security and bring that on the plane with you if you choose.

We always carry 4 footlong Subway sandwiches on our flights. We pick them up the night before (if it's an early morning flight) and then in addition to our 2 carry-on bags each, someone carries our food bag through security and on the plane.

We have a 2 1/2 hr flight coming up in 3 weeks, and even though it's a short flight, eating lunch on the plane will save us time when we land.

We go to the food court at our gate and buy a meal to take one--MacDonald's or Wendy's salads or a sub sandwich or whatever is there.
AND you can even carry an empty water bottle through security and fill it at the water fountain.

We've also brought Subway sandwiches, and sandwiches and salads we've purchased at the airport. The one thing I caution you about is that whatever you bring, it shouldn't be "aromatic" (a nicer way of saying "smelly" ).

You can bring your own food - but don;t bring anything with a strong odor. Any beverages must obviously be bought after security or from the cabin crew.

I always pack my own meals and snacks before I fly. My food is healthier and cheaper than anything I can find at the airport. I also bring an empty water bottle and packets of Crystal Lite so I can make up my own tea or lemonade after I pass through security.

I packed beef jerky once. My wife was asleep. When I opened it up she came to life and about killed me.

You can carry on any drinking liquid as long as you buy it after you go through security. A lot of the restaurants/delis in the gate area are used to people ordering or buying to take it on the plane.

This past trip we took those very small individual peanut butter cups thingys and some crackers. I like to eat on a plane as it give me something to do on the flight.

Lol Spiro. My wife has great hearing but think she would sleep through my breaking out the jerkey - a mainstay if you need to snack/eat. When we shot a big deer in Oregon way back when - they were usually tougher than the smaller ones - but they made for great jerky - which we kept in a wire cage - hanging in the cool workshop - of 4,000 foot high KIamath Falls, Ore - all winter - and it was like candy.

Pack your lunch and enjoy. I like bringing a sandwich and some fruit, maybe something crunchy or a little sweet. You can also bring an empty water bottle and fill it up at the drinking fountain. If it's going to be a long flight and changes I buy an orange juice in a glass bottle to keep filled with water.

That's the trick Linda, go shoot Bambi, make jerky and you're set jeeze!

What I do mostly depends on WHICH airport/terminal. Some have great airside options and some don't. If it is someplace like SFO there are many good places to eat/buy for carry on and I don't bring my own. Just less hassle. But some airports don't much and I do bring something from home or buy Subway on the way to the airport.

Be aware that you won't be able to bring any left over fruit into Hawaii. It's been quite a while since I flew that route, obviously, since they fed us. I thought it was very odd that they gave up apples in our lunches, then told us we couldn't take them off the plane......

Some airlines have food/snacks for sale for long-haul flights such as the flight to Hawaii. DON'T count on being able to buy this food, however. My sister took one of these flights (American Airlines) last year and planned to buy food for herself and the kids. When she asked the flight attendant about buying snacks, she was told, "Oh, they only gave us a dozen snack boxes and we sold those in the front of the plane." Needless to say, there were grumpy kids and adults all over that plane!

remember that you get free soda, juice and glasses of water on the plane but I always buy water before I board the plane. Snacks are a thing of the past along with blankets and pillows unless you buy them. Hawaiian Airlines, however, still serves food for free when you fly to Hawaii. Love that airline. Took train from Portland to Eugene a few weeks ago and they hand out pillows like they were candy! One not enough, no problem they gave me 2 and that was only a 2.5 hr trip....
