Cesky Krmulov -Salzburg-Hallstatt where to stay and travel between

Hi
See our original thread
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...nd-queries.cfm

We decided on part of the itenarary as follows how ever suggestions/advises are welocme
Prague (3Nights)
Cesky Krmulov(2 Nights)
Salzburg(3Nights)
HallStatt(2 Nights)

That make 10 Days and we are left with 3 more days before flying out from Prague - This Part requires some serious help- We are thing to visit places close to Munich and then Train/Bus/drive to Prague. Your suggestions would be very help full

Our immeidate issue is finding places to stay in Cesky Krmulov ,Salzburg and HallStatt .
Would prefer apartment/B&B close to Center/tours etc.

second issue is the best way for travelling between these place should we rent a car from prague and drive through all the way or rent a car from palce to place with in each country.

Need serious help..
Thanks

I stayed at Hotel Konvice within the old part of Cesky Krumlov. The parking area is about a 7 minute walk from the hotel. You can drive into the center to unload the car and then must move the car to the parking area.

There are some nice pensions across the river from the center of CK. My internal compass says they were on the south side, near a parking lot. Perhaps 500 feet from what I'd call "the downtown".

We stayed a wonderful B & B, Haus Lenz, back in 2005
http://region.austria.info/at/guide/...home/home.html
Helga was wonderful and we really enjoyed our stay with her. Highly recommend! One of the days we stayed it was quite chilly and rainy so we took our little travel scrabble game and bottle of wine down to the "breakfast" room to have a game. Helga joined us to watch, we offered some wine and when our bottle was done she grabbed one of hers and the 3 of us polished that off. Naturally lots of conversation and at the end of the day a totally unplanned experience that really enhanced our trip!

In beautiful Cesky Krumlov we stayed at Pod Skalkou, mere blocks from the old town, another place we highly recommend.

You will love all the places you have on your itinerary. We stayed in Salzburg at a home on the edge of town, nice but not for everyone, the room didn't have a private bathroom. In Prague we stayed at a place I would not recommend to anyone, it was dirty and 6 flights up...not worth the walk up!

See our little home page for a few notes. http://home.roadrunner.com/~tomshirl/index.html

I also did post a trip report for the Czech Republic on Fodor's. Happy travel planning, a good portion of the wonderful traveling experience for sure!

From your previous post I see that you read my trip report (glad it was so helpful), so I won't add my recommendations for places to stay since you already have those (sorry Hotel Konvice is already booked up).

I think it is unneccesary to spend two nights in Hallstat. It is stunningly beautiful, but not a lot to do there and can easily be done as a daytrip from Salzburg. Then I would probably do 4 nights in Salzburg and add the additional night to Munich. Also, I am suggesting eliminating the nights in Halstatt only so you don't have to move hotels so much, particularly with two kids. The distance between Hallstat and Salzburg is only about 1-1.25 hour drive.

I would just rent the car in Prague and return in Prague. We rented in Munich returned in Munich and drove through Czech Republic and Austria. We told rental car company we were doing that and it was no problem. We didn't rent the car until leaving Munich, but several nice hotels/b&bs are located in neighborhoods not just in the city center where I think parking might not be so difficult. Ours - Hotel Uhland was in a neighborhood.

I think constantly dropping off and picking up a new car would be a pain and eliminate the advantage of having a car.

Hi jgg, Its a pleasure to have you here.

Your travel report was excellent and I was so impressed that I was almost tracing your steps.

Indeed very valid inputs. I was so impressed with the Picturesque HallStatt, I thought I could recover completely there. But you are right we already felt that the number of check in/Check outs are way too many.

I enjoyed having 2 nights in Hallstatt. Didn't arrive until mid to late afternoon so it was really only 1 1/2 days. I found plenty to see and do in that time. Actually, wished I had another day!

I'd probably add a night to both Prague and Salzburg so you have 4 nights in each.

From Prague, you could do a day trip to Terezin. Pick up your rental car when leaving Prague on your last day.

From Salzburg, there are many day trips that you could do.

For your last night, I'd stay somewhere within a decent driving distance of Prague airport and drop the car at the airport on flight day.

joannyc, Thanks for your suggestions.

Not able to find places to stay in Hallstatt. Considering my daugter's age I might keep my base at SalzBurg. and do day trip to HallStatt.

Yet to find a place in Salzburg too.most of the fodors suggested places are full.
