Classical Concerts
We are in Vienna for 3 days (10-12 August), Prague for 3 days (13-15) and Salzburg for 2 days (17-18) August.
We are very keen to see a good concert in one of these places.
We have a 4 year old with us who has never been with left with a babysitter - not sure if she will be ok being without us in a new place. Plus we will not be in full formals - a suit for example is out of question given the packing constraints. Ideally, the place should allow casual dress - jeans and sneakers. I can pack a pair of formal shoes and a trouser if required.
Are there any options for me? I went to some sites to check for tickets. They do not mention if I can take my kid. They also say formal evening dress is not required - what does this mean?

It all depend were you go and for which occasion.
If you go in the national opera in Vienna for a big event there is a chance that you will need to suit up !
My guess is that you will have more luck in Prague were it must be less formal.
I went a couple of time in the opera (in some european capital) and most of the time a simple shirt and a decent pair of shoes are OK...they don´t really check anymore !

We are not big music fans, but while in Vienna two years ago we decided to attend one of the concerts. In this case, it was a choral concert at the Musikverein.
We attended without very formal attire. We were clearly underdressed, but it was not an issue (in this case, I wore khakis).
The biggest concern, I think, is your child. In the case of this theater, they locked the doors during the concert (I cannot say that all of the doors were locked, but some clearly were as people who tried to exit could not). So I would try to make sure this isn't an issue for you.
Generally, and keep in mind, I have only been to this one venue, I would not want to take my 4 year old into one of the more formal performances. I think it would be difficult even for the best behaved child to get through the night without an incident.
Another option might be to attend the Mass where the Vienna Boys Choir performs. It would be easier to move your child in and out depending on her mood. But I think this only takes place on Sundays. It is an enjoyable performance.

In Prgaue you will find lots of places doing tourist concerts at various times of the day ,you really can't avoid their leaflets and you will see them in the Tourist offices, these are quite casual affairs the the standard is of reasonable qulaity.
higher class concerts and operas are held in the Municiple House, National Opera house, Rudolfinium and the Estates theatre you can see what is on from this link.

The Municiple in my experience has folk more casually dressed but when I have been to concerts/operas in the other places lounge suits/evening dress seemed to be the order of the day

Major music companies are on vacation in July and August in Vienna- State Opera, Philharmonic, Volksoper. Thus you miss these opportunities .
2nd rate tourist oriented concerts are available with overpriced tickets and mediocre quality. These without dress codes.
My opinion any concert of any length for a young 4 year old is both unfair to the child and to those sitting adjacernt.
One choice in Vienna isd the nightly free concert on the giant TV screen in front of the City Hall / Rathaus.
An excelent food court with international food options there and quality music. large free seating area. No dress code

I would save the good concert for a time when you can go without your daughter. It's not fair to her, to you, or to others who have paid a lot of money for tickets. I can't imagine a 4 year old sitting through a concert which may last a couple of hours.
Why don't you go to one of the church concerts in Prague. They are very reasonably priced (your daughter may get in for free). That way if you need to leave you won't lose much money.
BTW those stone churches are freezing so bring sweaters. You don't notice it when you walk around the churches and are only inside for a few minutes but sitting for 45 minutes you will feel the chill.

I went through a few sites and Molker, you are right, all the big names are away on vacation. In fact, the Vienna Boy's choir is also away on vacation...
I do agree that it is unlikely that my 4 year old will last a 2 hour concert
I will look into the option of church performances (since we are there in Vienna on a sunday) or if there are shorter concerts in any of these places.
