Suggestions for Family Month in France Summer 2013

My husband and I would like to take our six-year-old son to France next summer for about a month. We have never been! I speak a little French and intend to brush up before we go. I could use some recommendations for newbies like ourselves. Should we "live" in Paris, or on the coast? Or somewhere in between? A small village that conveys real French life is preferred. Thank you, in advance.

Spend a week in Paris, some days at the beginning of your stay and some days after. Split the three remaining weeks into two different areas, in both cases renting a gite.

"after" ... meaning at the end of your month's stay.

Good advice from Michel, generally smaller people in smaller towns wll be more patient on language issues which will give you time to "catch up". gites-de is very good but if you find a particular town, their tourist info can also book such a thing.

So many choices, I'd recommend looking at rivers, and the coast as critical to the fun. That offers you Normandy and Brittany, Alsace, the Loire, the Tarn.

You could also look at hiring a canal boat for a week. Canal du Midi is obvious but there are other sites including one that starts in Auxerre.

I suggest get a book and start reading.

Don't forget the Dordogne - myriad things there a 6-year-old would love!
