Salaries are high (compared to most places in the US) and social services are free. Also, people live in much smaller houses and except for the wealthy often have a simpler life style (not driving around in $40,000 SUVs that get 10 mpg).

Social services are paid for out of taxes. Nothing is free. None of the people I know in DK live in smaller houses, not even their summer cottages are small. Small compared to houses in the US perhaps.
Not all the restaurants I mentioned are expensive, Bof & Ost has a lunchtime herring buffet which is good value @ DKK98, lunch is until 4pm. Skovehoved hotel has a set menu certain nights inc wine. It's less expensive to eat out at lunchtime. Also bakeries sell open sandwiches and other savouries. If you venture out of CPH to a fishing village you might get fresh smoked fish - another less expensive eating option. And if you go to a shopping mall, you will find more choices eg fisketorevet. And there is always the Pølse (hotdog) stand , pizza & kebab places.

www.telegrafen.dk, www.torvehallerne.dk, for open sandwiches, www.kanalkafeen.dk, www.tivolihallen.dk. For our amusementpark Tivoli come after you have eaten. We have a system if you can manage that the site is only in Danish. www.earlybird.dk. One third off the price when they have empty tables for the same day.
