Which prepaid SIM card for 11 months in Australia ?

Our 17 years old son is going to Australia next week as exchange student for 11 months.
He will need a prepaid and rechargable SIM card for local calls with option for 1GB internet/month preferably without the need of a contract. He will be living at the border between NSW and VIC. Have no idea about local operators and offers. Any suggestions ?
Buying it once there or before arrival ? I am afraid there is not enough time now to order it in advance !!
Thanks a lot !

Hi Fabio
Telstra has by far the best range & this will be important, especially if he is loving/ travelling out of city limits.

Here are a couple of links which might be useful:

He won't need to buy before he arrives. It's a quick & easy process.

Thanks a lot Bokhara2

He will be based in the Echuca,Vic - Moama,NSW towns area along the Murray River. The useage of the cell phone will be relatively limited to his new friends, students and the host family.
Yes, definitely a good coverage is a good point !

That's a lovely area, Fabio & a great opportunity for your son to have a richer experience with country life.
His host family will probably be the best people to advise the best carrier & deal for him down there.

All the very best to your boy - he will have a ball here. I know your family have been here many times.
My niece lived in Milan for 5 years and that time was such a memorable & wonderful part of her life.

Thank you very much !

Yes, we have been downunder 5 times for holiday trips!
We will visit him next year end of January or March.

It looks the host family are wonderful people with 2 sons, one aged the same 17, the other 15, plus 2 cats and 2 dogs.

Grazie e ciao !!
