Northern Spain with little kid

Hi guys,

We are planning trip (me, my wife and 2 years old daughter) in the middle of September for 2 weeks in Spain - Pyrenees area.
Current plan is to land in Barcelona, rent a car and drive to Pyrenees to enjoy our vacation.
I was wondering if you could recommend on 2 places to stay, where we could rent an apartment and use as a base, so we could go and have hiking trips (up to 10 km per day) and will come back in the evening.
It would be great to have few restaurants, supermarket and swimming pool in this small village/town. Lakes and beautiful landscapes are important as well .
We had similar trip last year in Dolomites and stayed in Ortisei (pointed out by community) and it was great, all hiking trips were accessible, buses, supermarket, bakery, swimming pool.
So we are looking for something similar.

Thank you very much,
Slava

What about Torla? Breathtakingly beautiful village at the entrance to the Ordesa National Park.

Just a few hundred live here, but there are several small shops, two supermarkets and some 10-12 restaurants. Had some excellent trout with cured ham in one of them some years ago. Should be plenty of swimming pools also. There are at least swimming pools in Hotel Villa de Torla and Hotel Ordesa: http://www.hotelvilladetorla.com/

IS there something wrong with kimhe´s suggestion of Jaca? If so, maybe you could tell us what is wrong with Jaca from your point of view. Otherwise we are in the dark.

I am not sure about Jaca.

It looks as if I can't find much info about it. Apart from marketing advertisements... no reviews, no comments, etc.

So I want to check if there are other options.

Isaba, a bit further west is also beautiful. Nighttime and moonlight in Isaba is as being in the midst of a theater scene.

This video eventually becomes quite cool, pure Isaba:

Ortisei has just over 4600 inhabitants and you seem to have been very happy there. Jaca has 13,000 inhabitants.

You right and we will stay in Jaca as it looks to be nice base for our activities.
Will stay there for 5 nights (any recommendation for apartments or aprathotel?) then we are thinking about moving into Basque area.

Do you think it is good plan?

A good plan, and there are several fabulous cities/towns (small and large) along the Basque coast if you go down there. You have several options, but I recommend going from Jaca through Isaba and up to Arrete Pierre St. Martin. Then westwards to St Jean Pied de Port. This is perhaps the most beautiful car ride I have ever done, in and out of sunshine, rain, clouds and stunning landscapes.

From here I would go through Roncevalles (defeat of Charlemagne and the death of Roland in 778) towards Pamplona, perhaps best known for the San Fermín festival. San Sebastián on the coast (pop 170 000) is a fantastic city, a favourite for Spanish and French summer guests for some 150 years. Much smaller and wonderful seaside towns close by San Sebastián are Hondarribia/Fuenterrabia and Getaria.
