Where in Colorado for my family trip?
We have been to the Durango area and Buena Vista/ Colorado Springs areas. Where should we go next? We are looking to travel with several families with people ages 19-70 years so need a large rental with 5 or more bedrooms and an area with something for everyone. We love jeep trips, river rafting, history, etc. Thanks for any ideas!

So many choices in Colorado. You might consider the Summit/with Breckinridge/Frisco/Keystone, etc - or a little further at Vail - or more pricey Aspen. Even Grand Junction - or down to Telluride/Durango.
Or head north from Denver to Estes Park/RMNP, etc.

Aspen is always referred to as more pricey, but I don't think that's necessarily true, compared to Vail and Beaver Creek.
The setting of Aspen is much nicer than Vail's location right on the highway, IMHO. There is history in Aspen, also, plus everything else you like.
Try The Gant for large condos, but probably not 5 bedrooms (several families in one place sounds like a recipe for disaster, anyway). It is walking distance to town, has a shuttle, tennis courts and two pools. We have really enjoyed it.
There are less expensive places in Aspen, as well. I suggest staying in Aspen proper, instead of Snowmass, because it is a nice town to walk in.

Any ski area will provide a variety (still reasonable, for the most part, off season) of lodging; maybe even a house (for example, the Beaver Creek area; although I personally would avoid that like the plague). There are also usually non-snow recreational activities associated with ski areas, plus dining, shopping, etc.

BTW, I second the Gant; from Aspen, you could go to nearby Redstone (and Redstone castle), along the Crystal River, and hike to Marble to view the quarry (and scenery), and even take a jaunt to nearby Glenwood Springs for the fabulous hot springs pool.

There are two nice large old hotels right near the world's largest hot spring fed swimming pool.
I-70 runs right next to the Colorado River. The Amtrak station is on the south side of the river.
I even enjoyed hiking up to the cemetery to see the memorial stone of Doc Holliday.
The strange story of Doc Holliday if anyone is interested:
In addition to bring a gambler, Doc was a dentist.
He died of TB which was an occupational hazard for dentists of that era. He owed many people money at the time of his death. There was a casket with rocks in it buried in the cemetery shortly after he died. His body was kept for months in a cellar in town. He was buried somewhere in the cemetery at night but no one living knows where. The memorial stone surrounded by a small fence came many years later. He did not want his body dug up by grave robbers and held for ransom.

I would head to Steamboat Springs, a couple of hours from Denver. Lots of neat condo complexes at the ski area with pools, hot tubs and space to roam. Great hot springs pool downtown and a natural one in the surrounding area, two beautiful lakes north of town and a pretty river runs through town although I guess it is pretty low right now. Steamboat is a real town with shops, restaurants, bars, bookstores and a huge western store. Just google for good info. Prices are usually reasonable.
Writing this makes me want to head up there right now.

We stayed here last year and liked it; maybe you can get a discount on a couple of units.
We flew into Denver, got a SUV, drove to Boulder. Stopped at the Farmers AMrket and got veges, fruit, bread, some great jam and oil & vinegars.
Had lunch then drove up to Estes Park. Stopped at Safeway (took my Safeway/Vons discount card and finnished off the shopping) and then drove up to Estes PArk Condos.
We enjoyed a week here: neighbor kids caught fish in the creek outside the front door after an onsite fishing demo...
There really is no place to stay in RMNP so you have to drive in daily (and pa teh fee) or there is a bus that goes in.
One day I had a picnic at Sprague Lake which is so shallow the fishermen were standing in the middle of the lake: and so was the Daddy and Baby Moose!
