10-12 day trip, can you help plan?

10-12 day trip, can you help plan?
My husband are going to meet in Rome and we have 10-12 days to work with in October. I know he's really hoping to see Venice and I would LOVE to see something of Germany but understand that might have to wait for another trip. I have never left the country and I'm very excited but I have no idea what to do or see...we'd like to take the train to see other countries but we're not sure what would be doable...any help please?

10 or 12 days is not really a lot. Let us say you have 12 days. Then maybe you can do the following, considering you wish to go to Germany (I would advise more to the south in this case, Munich is really lovely, and so is the surrounding countryside)
4 days Rome
4 days Venice
4 days Munich (see if you can take a low-cost flight from Venice to Munich, check Ryan Air, Easyjet, or maybe even Lufthansa, the last not being low-cost, but you might still get a good fare)
Fly back home from Munich
You might even be interested to take low cost airline to Venice from Rome, otherwise check train possibilities.
4 days Rome
4 days Venice

Fly back home from Munich

How many days do you actually have onthe ground? You can;t count the day you land and the day you depart - since there is really no time to do anything.
If you have 12 full days in the ground you could:
Spend 3 days/4 nights in Rome
Spend 3 days/4 night Venice
Spend 3 days/4 nights in southern Germany
You would fly into Rome and out of the last city (sarch for multi-destination flights). The days not listed are spend going from one place to another.
If you have only 8 full days on the ground you should stick to two destinations - could be eithr Rome and Venice or Rome andsomeplace in souther Germany.
I would check out trains - bahn.de has schedules for all of europe.

Spend your time in Italy. The trap inexperienced travelers fall into is trying to do too much in a short period of time. As my mother says about her tours, "we saw everything, sort of".
There are some nice side trips in Italy,so you don't have to spend all your time in cities.
Near Florence is the lovely town of Siena, about an hour away and perfect for a day trip.
Just watched Rick Steeves on TV and he talked about the town of Lucca, just West of Florenc, which looked very pretty and was car free. I plan to check this out on my next trip.
I Love Venice and have been many times.
There are some nice side trips in Italy,so you don't have to spend all your time in cities.

Spend the time in Florence and Rome. We have been to both cities multiple times and will return again in February 2013. Lucca and Siena are both easy day trips out of Florence and are worth the time. You can take a bus to Siena and a train to Lucca.

I want to add that if you intend to go to Munich, there is the famous Oktoberfest, a beer festival, in Munich, it a lovely feast where there would be sausages and other typical German food, bands playing, etc. They set up big tents, and it is also a feast for all the family, not just beer lovers. Beautiful atmosphere, also in the pubs. I did not personally go, but some friends, and also my mother had gone, and they all went on about the lovely atmosphere of this big festival.
I checked for you, and this year it is going to take place between 22nd September to 7th October. I do not know whether you will manage to make it by the 7th.
If you intend to go to Germany, I would definitely skip Tuscany, and visit Rome, Venice, and Munich, spending 4 days in each place.

Octoberfest will be jam-packed, and I suspect you would need to have made your reservations a long time ago.
In 12 days on the ground you would end up realistically having 10 days actually seeing places when intercity travel is factored in. So look at it that way. Three days each in Venice, Florence and Rome.
add one more day in one of the cities -- Rome probably because there is so much to see there. A side trip from Florence to Pisa with a stop in Lucca is a possibility. We have stayed in Lucca and like it very much. Well worth a day. Buy the Rick Steves guidebook for Italy to get good basic info for new travelers. Don't skip the first couple of chapters on the culture and how to get around.
If you have not bought airplane tickets, fly into Venice and out of Rome. As you will read elsewhere, getting to early morning flights out of Venice is very difficult because transportation options from your hotel to the airport are limited.
