Luna Caprese, Ercolano, Italy

Do I have this right? The only day Luna Caprese is closed is Sunday? Hopefully, I am wrong. This restaurant was our choice for lunch as we walked back to the Ercolano train station.

Does anyone know if there is a comparable pizzeria on IV Novembre that is open on Sunday?

Hello i_am_kane,

My cousin lives in Ercolano. I will email her son and see if they have any info on Luna Caprese.

Are you going there to see the ruins of Herculaneum? We were there almost 25 years ago when they were still excavating.

Buongiorno,

How are you doing? It's been a while since we last "talked." You are an angel...thank you so much for contacting your cousin!

Yes, we will be visiting Herculaneum Scavi in the morning, plan on eating lunch on our walk back to the train station. After that we will stop at Torre Annunziata (Villa Poppea).

I sent an email. Her son sometimes takes a while to respond but I will let you know as soon as I get any info.

You are going to the places we went to with our mothers (both now deceased) so many years ago! My mom was born in Torre del Greco. She has relatives in Torre Annunziata, too! I do not keep in touch with them as I do with the Ercolano cousins.

Sorry, but I have not heard back yet from my cousin in Ercolano. I will email again in a day or two. He usually takes a while to reply.

>>>We were there almost 25 years ago when they were still excavating.<<<

Twenty five years later, they are still excavating. I videoed some of the excavating on my last trip. They had just made a couple of small finds and were cleaning the dirt away.

Amazing, kybourbon! I must go back! My cousin in Ercolano took us there and hired a guide. Our mothers and son (12 at the time) loved it and so did me and DH.

I miss Italy. We haven't been there for 3 or 4 years, I think.

Hi i_am_kane,

I heard from my cousin. He did know specifically about the Luna Caprese and if it is open on Sunday or not. He said there is a pizzeria across the street from the ruins and another a little up the street. He said, to his knowledge, that the pizzerias are opened on Sundays.

He sent me a Google map link of the street and Luna Caprese. I thought that was a good idea. In fact, I had so much fun "walking" on that street that I Googled my mom's house address in Torre del Greco and found it!

He also mentioned his favorite pizzeria is Ristorante Gianni al Vesuvio with panoramic views but it is not near the ruins. It is near Vesuvious.

Sorry that it wasn't much help to you. I think perhaps the best thing to do is wait and see what is opened or to call the restaurant.

Good luck!

Are the pizzerias open for lunch or only for dinner?

Sorry, Adrienne, I cannot answer that since I didn't ask him that question.

Marianna, Thank you for your efforts. I will try to research Luna Caprese's open days/hours further.

Hi Marianna,

Just got back last night from Italy (one month). We did visit Herculaneum at Ercolano Scavi on a Sunday. The answer is YES, LUNA CAPRESE IS CLOSED ON SUNDAY.

We made do for lunch at another small pizzeria, which was just fine.

The trip was fantastic.

Welcome back!

I am delighted to hear that the trip was fantastic. A month in Italy sounds fabulous. Will you be writing a trip report or posting some pictures? I would love to know where you stayed on your trip. I know that you do a ton of research when planning your trips!

Prego,

A month in Italy means a lot of laundry when you return! I will not post a trip report...tried that quite a few years ago, and found it difficult.

The planning process was intensive. We were joined by a friends of ours (a married couple), who were with us for the entire eight days in Sorrento. Easy people to be with, and lots of fun. The remainder of the trip we were by ourselves.

Porto Santo Stefano (Hotel Torre Cala di Piccola) was an entirely different venue for us for eight days. The hotel is located on top of Monte Argentario in the Maremma (southern most Tuscany). We will probably never see a view like we did from our hotel again in our lifetime. We did, however, visit Isola Giglio where the Costa Concordia still lays...very sad.

The last eight days were in Venice - as we have never seen it before. Because it was our 3rd trip to Venice, we were able to visit Verona plus every sestiere as well as all the outlying islands at a relaxed, slow pace. Even in the early part of May, Venice was crowded.

It was an amazing trip.

Glad you had a great trip! Your hotel in Porto Santo Stefano has been only list for ages; were you happy with the hotel apart from the view? How did you spend your time there? Any day trips apart from Giglio? Any and all comments welcome!! Many thanks!
