14 hour lay over in Jakarta

We have a 14 hour layover in Jakarta, our flight arrives at 0830 and departs again at 2230.
Should we book in for the day at the nearby Sheraton, or could we hire a car and driver and head somewhere for the day?
I understand getting in and out of the City is hell and there is not much there, but with a good 8 hour + to kill is there somewhere in the country we could consider?
Thanks

The problem with going into the center of town is that you're likely to get heavy traffic in one or both directions. The Sheraton is fairly basic, but the pool area is acceptable.

There are nicer hotel options but probably not worth the effort and expense for a few hours. The Dharmawangsa, for example, has a wonderful pool and a wonderful spa.

If you like museums the National Museum is definitely worth a visit. Check the hours, though, as it closes early.

There are plenty of very good restaurants in the Central Business District and some excellent arts and crafts departments at the major department stores.

I do not recommend you to go out of Soekarno Hatta airport...the traffic is annoying.
Staying in Sheraton during a day, well...it's ok.. Dharmawangsa hotel is far away, as far as if you want to go to CBD, I am afraid you will loose your next flight.

Sorry, you didn't mention what day is it. If your date is Saturday or Sunday, it's ok going out of the airport. You can go to CBD.

Thanks Ragil, we are there on a Sunday, and we have a 14 hours transit, arriving at 0830 and departing at 2230.
I have found a company that does Transit Tours so thought that might be a reasonable option it visits:
Sunda Kelapa Harbour, Fatahillah Museum, National Monument and National Museum . Lunch at local restaurant, Indonesia in Miniature Park it is an 8 hour tour so we will still be back at the airport with a few hours to kill after.
What do you think? thanks

That's good Sharich, you can go around Jakarta. Miniature Park is wonderful place to know about Indonesian culture. I think there are some shows (traditional dance) but, perhaps it will crowded in Sunday. Sunda Kelapa Harbour and Fatahillah museum is a colonial heritage, in Batavia Cafe, we can taste spicy traditional food, or you can choose western menus, that's nice cafe. Have fun!

Can't really comment because I don't know your interests or previous exposure to Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The tour certainly sounds better than sitting at the airport for 8 hours. Each of the stops has validity, but may not be at the cultural level that you expect.

If you can pick and choose, I'd go with Sunda Kelapa (if you're interested in ships) and the National Museum (if you like museums) plus a good Indonesian lunch. I think there are much better, newer choices than Batavia Cafe, but that's the one that's always on the tour. I would give Taman Mini a miss.

If it's all or none, then it serves the purpose of filling up 8 hours without much effort on your part. Jakarta isn't an easy place for a visitor.
