What's trickier: JFK to LGA in 3 hr or IAD to DCA in 4.5 hr?
This is someone who'll be traveling by himself, and who, though creative and bright in many ways, tends frequently to daydream past his exit when driving.
Would he be better off coming the previous day where he only needs to change plans at ORD?

JFK to LGA depends on where he is coming from. If he is coming from outside the US and has to go through immigration there is a very good chance that 3 hours from JFK to LGA will not be enough time. I would make another choice if possible.

BA offered those options with reward trip from LHR to STL.
The NY transfer option sounded borderline nuts, and I wasn't even thinking about having to get through immigration. Thank you for verifying that, nyt.
