Suggests for a coastal town south of Savannah
Hi All
We are coming from Scotland to The South in October for two weeks. We will fly into and out of Atlanta. We have visited once before about 7 years ago and loved The Low Country.
We are heading straight to Edisto Island for one week but are a little lost for the second week.
In the past we travelled from Savannah up the Outer Banks to Washington and so would like to go south.
Our week in Edisto will include trips to Savnnah and Charleston. Beaufort is also by and so we will have our fill of "towny" days of breakfast and coffees.
In the second week we are looking for someone to base ourselves which will be wildlife driven and possibly hire a motor boat.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for an area to base ourselves? Our a house rental possibility at around $1500 a week.

St Simons Island has a nice town with really serious golf.
Jekyll Island was the home of the great and the good through the depression and still has interesting historic buildings from the pre WWI period. It also has a superb state park with lovely beaches.
Just over the Florida border is Amelia Island, which has large golf resorts and the wonderful smallish town of Fernandina Beach.
Any of these would be worth learning more about.

Hilton Head Island - may be a bit too built up for you.

Fripp Island
Francis Marion National Forest is just north of Charleston
Cumberland Island National Seashore (a National Park area) is just south of Jekyll Island and north of Amelia Island and the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is in the same general area so you can easily drive to both of those parks when staying at either Jekyll or Amelia.
Hint: Go to Google Maps and zoom in on the areas between say Charleston and Amelia Island and you'll be able to easily identify many of the State and National Parks where you'll be able to see plenty of wildlife. Look along the coast - you'll find plenty of rivers, tributaries and sections of the Intercoastal Waterway (it runs from the southern tip of Florida to the Chesapeake River) where you should be able to rent a boat.

Thanks for the above, I have looked at the islands mentioned above.
Jekyll looks really expensive. The rentals are way above the norm for the coastal areas : is it very posh?
St Simons looks quite developed with lots of condos which is what we are trying to avoid.
Having looked at the National Parks (thanks for the tip Roamsaround), Cumberland and Blackbeard look perfect but I can't see rentals there. Blackbeard looks too good to be true, considering we are taking our 6 year old son with a metal detector.

Jekyll is the opposite of posh. It's the middle class island. Very residential and natural. I'm surprised rates are higher than elsewhere but it's a small island so it may be supply and demand. St. Simons is more "posh" than Jekyll. It has some condos but is not overly developed. Cumberland is a national seashore. You can camp there or stay at the VERY POSH Greyfield Inn. How does Blackbeard look perfect? What's there? Years ago we went over for a fishing trip (jon boat in a fresh water lake) and got too close to the bank. An alligator bigger than the boat slid into the water, slammed her tail in anger, and swam slowly under our boat. We had gotten too close to her kits on the bank of the lake. It may be the most scared I've ever been in my life. She could have easily flipped up if she wanted to - and there was no one within miles to go to for help. I wouldn't take a child to Blackbeard for a vacation.

He loves pirate stories and the rumours about Blackbeards sound interesting. I appreciate that there is little of a human impact there but that is the attraction. I deal with 400,000 people a year face to face in pur business and so need some peace for some of our holidays.
There is always clearly an inverse relationship between number of people and wildlife and thank to for the warning about the alligators. In the past , before William, we have encountered Tiger sharks in The Bahamas and Black Bears on Vancouver Island. We do try to avoid extreme nature with him now.
The owner of the rental on Edisto has now offered us his place for two weeks rather than one. Do you think it is worth staying put on Edisto for two weeks or is it worth spending the second week further south? Will the experience be any different in coastal GA?

I haven't camped since boy scouts and the hotel on Cumberland looks a little pricey but want to visit for the day.
The cottage in Shelman Bluff : perfect price, size and decor. Will research that area.

The owner of the house on Edisto offered us the house two weeks in the end which solved our problem and we have booked this.
We are going to try to get down to Cumberland (but not Blackbeard).
The highlight of the trip will be Halloween in Savannah. Which is something we hadn't planned or noticed until last night. Halloween In Savannah should beat digging for Blackbeard's treasure for our son.

This is certainly worth considering. I don't know how much time you will have, but friends have enjoyed staying here. Sapelo is the island adjacent to Blackbeard.
