Which Paris suburb?

Perhaps if you could tell us what your interests are, and a bit about your family, as well as what you wish to get out of living in a Parisian suburb, some of the Fodorites who know those areas could give more helpful answers.

I have three teenage boys and a 10 year old girl. We will be spending much of our time exploring Paris and the surrounding areas but when we are back at our lodging we would like to relax in a safe, comfortable open area. Which of the above suburbs would be a better fit?

These are in zone 3 and 4 of RATP transit area with 20min or so to get to the RER/Metro stop in Paris according to the RATP planner. Adding time to get to Metro or RER station on the lodging side and adding time to get your actual destination in Paris probably mean 40min or more one way. This does not sound attractive if your objective is to spend much time exploring Paris. Surrounding areas would probably easier to explore from the core of Paris instead from the suburbs because the transit radiate from the city center outwards. You might have compelling reasons why you chose accommodations rather far from the city core. But with the info provided, neither place seem to fit your need from the access point of view. Wouldn't an apartment in city core provide a safe, comfortable accommodation with a fraction of commuting overhead? I presume you are not planning to drive into the city.

I would look for an apartment in the first seven arrondissements in central Paris. That way you can walk to a lot of sites and enjoy the charms of central Paris. The cost of travel, including your time, will likely offset some of the price difference.

Hi cleme1q. I left you a response on your Trip Advisor thread as well but just a reminder if you coud give the specific addresses of these places that would be very helpful. I live just south of Fontenay-sous-Bois and take that RER A line into Paris all the time. Fontenay does have some nice neighborhoods but I'd need to see where your place is on a map.
I'm assuming with a family of 6 that perhaps you've found cheaper housing options outside of Paris than inside. Or perhaps you're doing a home exchange. A bit more info would help with giving you better suggestions.

Why the suburbs if your aim is to explore Paris? Agree we need more information. Personally, I can't see the benefit of having a 40-minute commute each day; when I'm in Paris, I like to at least have the option of returning to my hotel/apartment during the day, for example, to freshen up and change clothes for dinner. If I had a 40-minute commute, that would put me off.

I must say the replies you have received so far on TripAdvisor are a little more helpful than those received so far here. I live at the end of the RER line that goes through Nanterre so I pass through Nanterre's 3 RER stations every day. You're certainly not cut off or far from Paris if you stay here. Nanterre Ville's RER station is no more than a 10-minute ride from Charles-de-Gaulle-Etoile RER station and the other two stations (Nanterre Université and Nanterre Préfecture) are no more than a 5-8 minute ride away from the same location. More prohibitive than the time spent is the potential cost of travelling, but it's still very affordable compared to London's metro tickets and you don't say how often you'd actually be planning to go into Paris/exactly what the purpose of your visit is.

Hey Bianca_P, I didn't know you were a fellow suburban RER A traveller. 
You must live in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which I love and bike through occasionally. From Fontenay-sour-Bois (in my neck of the woods) it's only a 10 minute RER trip to Châtelet-les-Halles. The OP mentioned on their other thread that they're doing a home exchange, hence the reason for the suburban locations.
