Munich Itinerary for 3 days
We will be in Munich for 3 days. Kindly advise an itinerary as we will be 2 adults and 2 children of 12 years. This will be our second visit to Munich.
We would be interested in a day visit to Nuremberg if possible. Visit Olympia Park, BMW Museum and Deutsche Museum. Is Nuremberg Palace worth a visit after seeing the palaces of Vienna. Kindly advise. Any other sights and attractions in the city.
Also, from where can we get good hiking shoes/walking shoes not very high end.
Lastly, any recommendations for Viktulienmarkt and where to have schwein haxen.

I probably would not waste a full day of three to see Nuremburg. The castle is okay, but nothing that takes your breath away IMO.
You can visit Munich Residence or Nymphenburg park & palace if you and your kids are not fed up yet with royal buildings after Vienna.
In Munich the sights you mentioned are fine, esp. with/for kids. Keep in mind that Deutsches Museum has three locations in Munich, one central downtown, transport in west central, and planes at Munich's northern edge.
Schweinshaxn.. good grief.. is that a must??
You are much better off with a slice of Schweinsbraten with a dumpling.
If weather permits, the best place to eat are the big beer gardens.
Especially Hirschgarten beer garden, a bit west of the city center. Huge outdoor seating (around 10K), tables with service have table cloths (avoid those), the "naked tables" are self-service.
Augustinerkeller beer garden (near the central station and the BR "skyscraper") is also good.
One peculiarity of Munich beer gardens is that you are allowed to BYO food for the outdoor self-service tables.
But NOT beverages.

Sport Schuster, Rosenstr., also near Marienplatz
Also Karstadt Sport department store on Karlsplatz/Stachus (next to Karl's Gate) has a good range of hiking boots.

Olympic Park looks like it would be fun for the kids and you too. Unfortunately, it was closed when we were there but we went to the BMW world and museum.
Are you planning on taking a hike in the hiking boots while on vacation? You may want to break them in ahead of time.

Strongly agree with LSky that your hiking boots need to be broken in before going hiking. The older the boots the better (not completely falling apart, of course).
If you're thinking of saving on the weight of the boots, then wear them on board the plane. You can always take them off once seated and, provided your fellow passengers around you haven't fainted, you can keep them off until you land. Bring some of those plastic booties that the painters and furniture movers wear (I hate going to the bathrooms in my socks only).
Either that or go hiking in your walking shoes. I am presuming that you're not doing really difficult hikes that require a lot of traction and support from your boots. My walking shoes are a pair of Merrills that are slip on and off (great for the airport!) and I hike the hills around my home in them, so they're perfectly fine for walking and hiking.

You can get additional waterproofing and spray that on. It'll darken the suede a bit but is ideal for wet weather wear and splashing in street puddles.
Again, strongly suggest that you get your hiking boots/shoes before departure and break them in at home.
As for Munich's Residenz palace or the Nymphenburg palace, with kids I'd opt for Nymphenburg - on a good day. Its total size is larger than Vienna's Schonbrunn and your kids would probably enjoy being outdoors and walking to each smaller building/pavilion. Layout is somewhat similar to Schonbrunn, if you've been there. Nymphenburg is easily reached by public transportation.
If you are going to the viktulienmarkt, try the Munich specialty, the weiss wurst, in the morning.

Thanks all for the wonderful ideas and clarity. Is it easy to get around in Munich? On our last visit we were just walking to the Residenz and other attractions.
Cowboy1968 - In a separate post you had recommended a City-Airport day ticket Partner valid for 5 pax? Can the same ticket be bought and used for all modes of transport in case we plan to go to Nymphenberg and Deutsche Museum as I feel the kids might get an overdose of palaces and may not want to see more but last time they were happy walking through Viktulienmarkt. Also, you mentioned the Augustinerkeller near the Central station and BR skyscraper. Is the central station same as Hauptbahnhof?
Is the Andech monastery worth a visit?
Lastly please advise on good metzegerei and supermarkets from where we can make some nice picnic meals.

The airport ticket covers the whole network. You will need just a fraction of it, the city area of Munich.
If you plan to use public transport every day, your best choice is the 3day Partner day pass "Innenraum" for €23.70. If it will be needed just for one day, that pass costs €10.20.
Except Nymphenburg palace most sights are in walking distance from Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof (which does mean central station).
Destinations like Dachau concentration camp memorial or the plane museum section of Deutsches Museum or Andechs monastery (nice trip, just avoid weekends!) would not be covered by this ticket.
Actually, it would be best if you came back once you finalized your list of sights you plan to see so we could suggest the best type of ticket for each day.

Thanks Cowboy1968 for the quick revert. To be honest I have kept Munich itinerary lose as it is the last destination of our trip and we would like to chill out alongwith seeing the sites.
We have planned for Ettal Monastery so I am not sure if we would like to go again to Andechs Monastery. Which one is the better one? Same is the case for Nymphenberg Palace.
But definitely keen on Deutsche Museum but which one to go for I am not sure as son is very keen on cars and planes. Would also like to do the BMW Museum and Olympia Park? Which attractions can be clubbed together? We will be arriving on Sunday and I understand Viktulienmarkt will be closed? What about the attractions? Will they be open.
