cheap flights to africa

I am looking at booking flights for my trip this summer. I want to fly from Edmonton to Mombasa, then I will fly from Nairobi to Cairo (or somewhere else in egypt) and then from Cairo back to edmonton. Just for the Edmonton-mombasa, mombasa-cairo, cairo-edmonton it is looking like $6000 when I check expedia. This seems way too high. anyone have other ideas?
Thanks!

As Atravelynn says, use Kayak to check prices. You might price out Edmonton - Nairobi - Cairo - Edmonton separately from Nairobi - Mombasa - Nairobi. Fly 540 Airlines in Kenya has some good fares on that route, so you might want a separate ticket for that.

cheapoair.com

My top 2...

Also might look at flying Air Transat
cheaply to Europe AMS perhaps pick up flights WAY cheaper from there. www.travelzoo.com great Kenya sale packages way cheaper than air alone with friendlyplanet.com if you can be flexible.

Happy Hunting!

When are you traveling?
You do know that if the summer months - June-Sept - is peak season when prices highest.

However, $6K does seem a bit up there.

Yes, check Kayak with the routing - EDM/NBO/CAI/EDM
The flight segment NBO/MOM can be arranged under a separate ticket, whether booked direct by you you - Air Kenya, Safarilink, Fly540 - or thru tour operator, who often get reduced rates.

There is regular service between CAI/NBO/CAI on Egypt Air and, I believe, also Kenya Air.

Good luck and let us know how much better you can do on price.

Try skyscanner.net

What we have done in the past is to check sky scanner, see what routes they offer and the pricing, then try the actual airlines directly and see if there is a price difference. That way you can save time searching as they give you all of the airline alternatives and you can either book with skyscanner or with the airline directly.

tlayton: i also live in edmonton area and am a bit of an expert at getting in and out of here.

try BA from calgary as they have better schedules and network. Air Canada is very cumbersome with their fares and connections.

Also LH via frankfurt is good also. So you could fly yyc/mombasa/cairo/calgary and then do a ow tkt from mombasa to cairo on egyptair.

if you go onto ba or lh websites you can put in departing yeg and they will give you the connections from yeg via yyc.

6,000.00 is high. I can fly business class yeg/cairo/yeg for less than that.

This is not correct!
Lol!!!!

You need to buy each segment separately.
I used www.airtreks.com for 3 around the world tickets and they always came in right around $5500.
They have a tool that you can do it all on your own before calling. It is really cool.

I have also used www.bootsnall.com (as AT requires at least 3 segments). I also bought a segment without paying extra.

Example: Atlanta-London RT= $1100 but I only wanted ATL-LON and was able to buy it for $500.

No way you will get these fares on any ticket engine on the net.
In America they actually charge MORE for segment tickets! Lol!!

As a last resort try the Indian local travel agencies.
For some reasons they never give you hassles (or markup) segment flights.

I was curious and did an Air Trek. Here are the segments given.

Edmonton, CA- London (sometimes it adds extra cities)
London- Nairobi
Nairobi- Mombasa
Mombasa- Nairobi
Nairobi- Cairo
Cairo- London
London- Edmonton

The 'base' price given was $2787- $3811

Alternatives:
There is a train from Nairobi to Mombasa. It is cheap and offers cabins with beds, linens, a window, and a meal.

If you take it during the day you will see the Serengeti.
So, I am told.
I did this during the riots and had to get off the train because they were stoning it and taking the tracks off.
Look forward to trying again, soon!

Mine was the overnight train. Not sure if it can be done in one day.

I suggest this as opposed to taking the flight.
This way you will save time and money!

Ugh!!!! Flights in Kenya and Tanzania were always delayed. At least 3-5 hours!

I advise you use routing as below;
YEA -NBO RT USD 2,210 Kenya Airways/KLM
NBO-MBA RT USD 185 Kenya Airways
NBO-CAI RT USD 760 Egypt Air

TOTAL USD 3,155
I got these info from a travel agency in Nairobi,Kenya.
If you buy one way the fare will be high.
I think this is reasonable and are system based.

Hi pody22,
Can you ask for the Cairo-Edmonton segment, so that
they have 2 agencies to compare?

Also, it looks like you have 3 choices for a layover coming and going. London, Paris, or Amsterdam. Yayy!

So you're told! Wrong!
The train doesn't go anywhere near the Serengeti which is in Tanzania. As stated, the train travels only from Mombasa to Nairobi. The train also ONLY travels alternate nights, 12/hrs. and often delayed. Departs 7pm with supposed arrival 7am next day either direction.

Hi, travel2eat,
The one way fare from CAI YEA is USD 2,780 on Egypt Air and Air Canada with stop over in London. You need a transit Visa for London.
The layovers for both coming and going are in Amsterdam in the option above. No visa restrictions for this option.
Cheers

EVERYONE needs a visa into Egypt. I assume you are traveling on a Canadian passport? If so, you can buy your visa at the airport for $15 USD - have USD on you, and best to have proper change if you can. If you are not a Canadian citizen, then you should check with the Egyptian Embassy in your country to see what the rules are, or you might post your nationality here and see if we are aware.

Hi, tlayton35,
A visa is required except for wives of Egypt nationals. You can apply for the Egypt visa while in Kenya or even from your home country.
Cheers.

Good point pody22, but can you clarify if this ONLY applies to fully legal wives, or does the Orfy wife get in without a visa too? I bring that subject up as MANY foreigners may not even be aware that they are Orfy wives or what that means, and if they show up without a visa or expecting to buy a visa, they might be surprised.
